  1. Chiropractic Dr Kendrah L Da Silva An evidence based practitioner

  2. What is a chiropractor? • A chiropractor is a person who practices chiropractic!

  3. But what is chiropractic? • The WFC identity consultation states the POLE of chiropractic as : • The experts in spinal health care within the health care system.

  4. How did we become the EXPERTS? • By chance? • Just lucky? • Hard work? • Research?

  5. The Pole • This chiropractic pole is as stable as the ground within which it is placed.

  6. The Ground • The ground therefore becomes the source from which the viability of the pole emanates. • The ground determines how expert we as a profession are.

  7. What is our CHIROPRACTIC GROUND? • Ability to improve function in the neuromusculoskeletal system, and overall health, well-being and quality of life.

  8. Specialized approach to examination, diagnosis and treatment, based onbest available research and clinical evidence, and with particular emphasis on the relationship between the spine and the nervous system

  9. Tradition of effectiveness and patient satisfaction. • Without use of drugs and surgery, enabling patients to avoid these where possible.

  10. Expertly qualified providers of spinal adjustment, manipulation and other manual treatments, exercise instruction and patient education

  11. Collaboration with other health professionals. This is only possible if you speak with knowledge, on the same level as other health professionals.

  12. A patient-centered and biopsychosocial approach, emphasizing the mind/body relationship in health, the self-healing powers of the individual, and individual responsibility for health and encouraging patient independence.

  13. Expert Professional Knowledgeable Ethical Accessible Caring Human Positive How do we get this stable ground?

  14. How do we achieve all this? • Knowledge we gain from studying • Knowledge we gain through research • The main aim of research is to render better patient care. • Thus, research based practices are beneficial to both provider and patient.

  15. Why should we practice evidence based chiropractic? • Research validates your practice (such as the ground which is the source from which the viability of the pole eminates!) • Adds credibility to our profession • WFC has established that it is part of chiropractic identity to practice research based chiropractic

  16. Leads to improved patient care • Helps evaluate existing treatment protocols • Promotes recognition and development of the profession.

  17. Once we understand research, we develop the confidence and the ability to review the literature critically and apply the knowledge and skills in clinical practice. • The link is mastering research as a student.

  18. Why is this so difficult? • Research skills and application of research in practice is sometimes limited • Probably due to inadequate training in research. • Apathy to attend post graduate training to stay abreast with new developments and research.

  19. How to encourage practitioners to practice evidence based chiropractic!

  20. Professional association incentives (education credits, practitioner cooperatives to provide time and resources for research.) • Evidence based practice however is limited probably because as a profession we are not adequately equipped to appraise or conduct research.

  21. We need to change the perceptions of research so that we may gain maximum benefits from it. • Providing chiropractors with the fundamentals of scientific research should be an objective of the education programme. • The education programme and the professional associations need to work in collaboration with each other.

  22. Once we have those skills where do we go? • We need to increase our accessibility to the research results. • We should develop practice based research networks • Support of professional associations.

  23. Summary • Learn how to do research as a student • Continue to apply your research skills as a practitioner. • This will result is great successes for your patients and for you as the practitioner.

  24. “We never know how far reaching something we may think, say or do today will affect the lives of millions tomorrow.” ( Bartlett Joshua Palmer)
