Today we’re going to talk about how Symbolism is used in Political cartoons

First of all...what is a Symbol?

A symbol is an object, (in our case a picture), that is used to represent something more than just the object itself.

  • Cartoonists will use simple objects to stand for larger concepts or ideas.
  • Symbols are often the building blocks of a particular cartoon.
  • Some symbols are famous
  • Symbols work as a kind of shorthand and make it possible to pack a great deal of meaning into a cartoon.
