  1. Use Block Style, so everything line touches the LEFT margin. (Nothing is indented.) Business Letter • Include YOUR address at the top (without your name) —in case the envelope is lost and the recipient needs to write back to you. Type when you have access to a computer; otherwise, write in very clear cursive. • After your sign-off, leave 4 BLANK LINES before you type your name, so you’ll have room to sign your name in cursive ABOVE your typed name. Always type your name in case the • receiver can’t read your handwriting.

  2. Business Letter • If you are handwriting, using lined paper, begin your address on the SECOND LINE from the top at the LEFT MARGIN. • Do NOT include your name. Start with your street address. (It is best not to abbreviate anything.) 1234 Some Lane #C Ontario, CA 9172

  3. Business Letter • Write today’s date directly below your address. • Write it the normal American way! 1234 Some Lane #C Ontario, CA 9172 May 22, 2009

  4. Business Letter • Skip TWO lines (called “triple-spacing” because you will be writing on the 3rd line below the date). • Write the address of the business that will receive your letter. (Do NOT write the person’s name, yet.) OR Maycomb Tribune Ontario High School 5678 Main Street 7688 West Francis Street Maycomb, AL 60666 Ontario, CA 91762

  5. Business Letter • Skip ONE line (so you’re writing 2 lines below the company’s address). • Write your salutation: Dear Mr. Underwood: or Dear Mr. Hust:  Notice the colon, not , Ontario High School 7688 West Francis Street Ontario, CA 91762 Dear Mr. Hust:

  6. Business Letter • Double-space, which means you skip 1 line (so you’re writing on the second line below the salutation). • Start writing your paragraphs. Do NOT indent at the beginning of any paragraphs. This style letter is called “Block Style” because it looks like all the lines are pushed up against a block on the left edge of the paper. • Double-space, between all paragraphs. Be sure to thank the person for his/her time.

  7. Double-space after the last paragraph and write your closing. • Capitalize only the first word of your closing. • Put a comma after the closing, • Quadruple space after the closing (so you’ll have room to write your name in cursive) and type your name. Thank you for time and attention. Sincerely yours, Karen Grace

  8. Business Letter • Fold the letter into thirds, so that the top is flapped down on top. (It should be what the reader first lifts up, so he/she can start reading immediately without having to turn the letter around for it to be right-side-up

  9. Business Letter • Address the letter with your name and address in the upper left corner of the envelope. • Put the receiver’s name and company name in the center of the envelope. • Put correct postage in the upper right corner.
