DESCRIPTION

In this essay, I propose a comprehensive reform of how we handle mentally ill individuals within our criminal justice system. Currently, many who struggle with mental illnesses find themselves in prisons rather than receiving the treatment they need. I argue for the establishment of specialized mental health courts and increased funding for community-based treatment programs. This approach not only addresses the root causes of criminal behavior among the mentally ill but also provides a more humane alternative to incarceration, ultimately benefiting society as a whole.
