COMBUSTION AND FLAME COMBUSTION AND FLAME
Pre assessment 1) --------is the fuel for our body 2) Which gas supports combustion (Hydrogen.Oxygen, Carbondioxide) 3) Which non-metal is stored in water ( sodium, Phosphorous) 4) Combustion is an ------------(exothermic/endothermic ) reaction.
LEARNING OBJECTIVEs • Define combustion • Explain the conditions needed for combustion
COMBUSTION • A chemical process in which a substance reacts with Oxygen to give off heat and light is called combustion • Substances that can burn easily to produce heat and light are called combustible substances • Substances that do not burn are called non-combustible substances
Conditions needed for combustion • Activity
BREAK OUT ROOMS • Students move into the breakout rooms and discuss the conditions for combustion and present their points • All will be back in 5 mins
FUEL • 1 Fuel ---- Any substance which reacts with Oxygen to release heat energy • Eg .wood, petrol, diesel ,LPG, kerosene, coal
Ignition Temperature • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2W2bpDmyiVg
Ignition temperature • The lowest temperature at which a combustible substance when heated catches fire continues to burn • Substances with low ignition temperature Catch fire easily and called as inflammable substance alcohol, sodium, white phosphorous, petrol
FA • Define combustion? • What are the conditions needed for combustion? • Green grass does not catch fire but dry grass catch fire easily • Wet paper take longer time to burn. Why? • A piece of paper can be burnt with a match stick but not a log of wood.Explain • What is the disadvantage of having high ignition temperature for a fuel?
DA 1 Substances which catch fire easily are called--- 2 minimum temperature at which a substance catches fire is called---- 3 Respiration is a process of------ • Cotton clothes are ------(Combustible/non-combustible) 5 Like fuel the sun also provides heat and light. The process taking place in the sun is called a. Combustion b. Nuclear process
