Henrys Life: • Born March 4th 1934 in the city of Porto Portugal • Died November 13th 1460 in Sagres Portugal • Also known as Duke of Viseu. • Was the son of King Jaoa of Portugal. • Very important figure for Portugal during the age of exploration and navigation in early Europe. • Very famous for leading great voyages to the indies and financing all the money and establishing routes. • Was a very religious man. • Was the governor of the order of Christ. • Henry was not a actual navigator.

Early Achievements: • Started studying the geography of Africa which eventually led him to map this whole region. • One of his main goals was to sail the west coast of Africa and find a successful route that lead to the indies and Asia. • Lead a successful conquest that defeated the Muslims in Morocco which made him an idol to his people in Portugal. • Henry sent out more than 50 voyages and never went on any. • He established his own school of navigation. • He designed new high quality ships.

  4. His school of navigation: • Started his own school in the year of 1418. • His school was located in Sagres. • Trained and help young men become great and successful scholars. • He taught navigation, astronomy, map making, and science.

Why is he the most important person in history? • With his great explorations and voyages he helped advance the study of geography. • Made Portugal the leader in navigation in Europe. • Discovered many important sea routes. • Was a very important role model to his people and Europe. • Was a very smart man.
