  2. NOBANIS – about the network • Voluntary network for sharing information on IAS • 20 participating countries • A network between authorities of the region – management oriented • Online database and information on IAS from the region • Covering many languages, cultures, management strategies etc.

  3. NOBANIS - historically • NOBANIS started out as a NCM project in 2004 with funding 2004-2008 • First Nordic and Baltic countries (NOBANIS) • Origial aim: Regional coorporation/ information sharing on IAS + web + database • When the NCM project stopped in 2008 there was still a great interest in keeping the network alive • More member countries expressed interest and joined

  4. NOBANIS – funding and future • Now funding is received through voluntary contributions from member countries and through project participation (NCM + EU) • Databases are owned, maintained, updated and uploaded by member countries • Support by the secretariat (1 person) • Operating costs: portal (IT) + the secretariat

  5. NOBANIS – scope of the database • Terrestrial, marine and freshwater habitats, covering all groups of organisms • A total of 7185 species • Also including not established species • ”Less is more” • Working with what we have, including countries with few data, continually improving

  6. NOBANIS – quality control • Each national database is built according to an authority file with a set vocabulary • Restrictions in upload • Secretariat support • The Steering group working on issues with taxonomy, spelling and synonyms etc.

  7. NOBANIS – pros • The database is continually updated • Relatively low maintenance costs • Funding is secured for at least 2012 • NOBANIS has 20 participating countries • Active: EW workshop, pilot projects for EW systems, testing the use of biogeographical zones • We have a large network of contacts in both ministries and research

  8. NOBANIS - collaboration • DAISIE yes, all NOBANIS data included in 2006 • GISD started (Piero) • GISIN had meetings in the beginning • FishBase no active colaboration
