  4. How CPS Came To Massachusetts • Provider Community Advocated for Credential • MDPH-BSAS Agreed with Providers • MA Certification Board Took Action, within IC&RC Requirements

CPS Grandparenting Phase • Grandparenting Window will Close June 30, 2013 (do not wait until last moment to request or submit materials) • Written Exam is Waived during this period • Comply with Education/Training Requirements • Comply with Work Experience Requirement • Comply with Supervision Requirement • Submit Application Materials • Fees

Education/Training Requirements • 100 hours Prevention Specific Education: 6 hrs Prevention Ethics, 50 hrs Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs, and 44 hrs Prevention Specific. • All education/training must have been completed within the past ten (10) years. • MBSACC allows 15 hours per academic credit (that is, 45 hours per 3-credit course) for academic courses specific to the certification education requirements. • For initial Certification, MBSACC does not accept academic credit which is awarded for: a) “prior learning” experience, b) courses certified by use of a challenge examination, c) on-line courses/programs or correspondence/home study courses, d) courses that were audited, or e) courses of independent study research.

  7. Documenting Education/Training • College Transcript and Course Description • Certificates Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) from Trainings, Workshops, and Conferences must include the following: a) Your Name (not handwritten) b) Title of Training c) Date(s) d) number of Hours e) Location f) Name and Signature of Director or Trainer • When in Doubt call Certification Office!

Getting Training Approved by Certification Board • Request Application from the Certification Board/Download for free from MassTAPP Web site • Complete, submit, and get prior approval (application is not complicated) • Pay Fee • Comply with Certificate Guidelines • When in doubt, call Certification Board

Work Experience Requirement • 2,000 hours of documented, supervised prevention specific work experience in the last ten years; • A minimum of 51% of the time must have been spent in providing alcohol, tobacco, and/or other drug abuse prevention activities and/or services; • OR a minimum of 51% of the time must have been spent providing supervision of prevention activities and/or services.

  12. Supervision Requirement • 120 hours with a minimum of 10 hours in each of the CPS domains. Supervision is broadly defined as the administrative, clinical, and evaluative process of monitoring, assessing, and enhancing performance. The supervision may have been completed under more than one supervisor and/or agency. • CPS Domains: 1) Planning and Evaluation; 2) Education & Skill Development; 3) Community Organization; 4) Public Policy & Environmental Change; and 5) Professional Growth & Responsibility.

Application Materials & Processes • Copies can also be downloaded from MassTAPP Website or you may contact the Certification Office • Complete Application and Sign where Required • Attach Supporting Documentation (CEU’s and/or Transcripts) • Supervisor(s) Complete and Submit “Supervisor Verification Form” • When in Doubt, Call Certification Office!

  14. Fees • $15.00 - Application Packet (E-mail/Web download Version - Free) • $200.00 - Application Review Fee - this fee must be mailed in with your application. • $60.00 - Certification Fee - to be paid upon notification of application acceptance and prior to the issuance of the Certification certificate.

  15. Re-Certification • To maintain the high standards of this professional practice and to assure continuing awareness of new knowledge in the field, MBSACC requires recertification every two years. To be recertified an individual must: 1. Hold a current and valid CPS Certificate issued by MBSACC. 2. Submit 40 contact hours of continuing education specific to prevention, approved by MBSACC, as described in the Recertification Policy. 3. Complete a Recertification Application, and pay the Recertification fee.

  16. Post Grandparenting • Requirements are being revised by Certification Board and will be distributed in the near future. • All applicants will have to take and pass the written exam and comply with work experience and supervision requirements. • Requirements and Applications will be made available by the Certification Board.
