Students requesting a private room must pay an additional fee. There are currently two optional excursions available, horseback riding (50) and a folklore evening (45). The deadline for your travelers to purchase optional excursions is 02/24/2010.

  7. Passports / Visas U.S. citizens traveling abroad must bring a passport that is valid for at least six months after the tour’s return and has at least three blank pages. Passport information can be found at the U.S. government passport website travel.state.gov.Please ensure that the name on the student’s EF account matches the passport. Otherwise, he or she may be subject to a fee.

  8. Please bring a copy of the passport to our next meeting, together with the “Checklist and Parental Approval Form”

  9. Parental authorization forms For tours going to Mexico, Costa Rica or Brazil, children under the age of 18 require a parental authorization form to be signed and notarized within 30 days of the tour departure date. Please bring the letter to our next meeting.

  10. Tips on Tipping Suggested tip amounts Tour DirectorYour tour director is with your group 24 hours a day, taking care of all the logistics on tour and becoming a partner and friend on the road. We suggest tipping your tour director $6 per person, per day. Bus Driver*Set aside an additional $3 per person, per day for your bus driver. Local guides*Plan to tip local guides $1 to $2 per person. Many group leaders tip local guides for half-day sightseeing tours. On a full-day excursion, it is typical to give a small tip to both the professional local guide and the day's driver.

  11. Hotels Hotels abroad are often not as modern or standardized as they are in North America. Rooms are usually smaller and have multiple single and/or shared double beds. Rooms seldom have air conditioning or televisions. Groups may not all be roomed next to each other and may be on different floors.

  12. Pack light All travelers should pack light and only bring as much as will fit in one suitcase and an EF backpack. Many airlines now charge for additional luggage. Students are responsible for loading their luggage on and off buses and into hotels.

  13. Clothing & accessories • Travelers should be conscientious of cultural differences and pack accordingly. Keep in mind that some religious sites require that shirts cover the shoulders and arms and do not allow short skirts or flip-flops. • Comfortable walking shoes and one pair of nicer shoes • Shirts (short and long sleeved) • Socks and underwear • Watch • Shorts/pants/jeans • Pajamas • Bathing suit with cover up • Dressier outfit (reserved for a special night out) • Raincoat and/or umbrella • Lightweight nylon jacket or warm-up top (rather than bulky sweatshirts) • Bug Spray • Sun Block

  14. Toiletries • Toothbrush • Toothpaste • Shampoo/conditioner • Soap • Deodorant • Hairbrush/comb • Sunscreen • Any medications (in addition to a copy of any prescription) • Spare set of contact lenses/glasses (if applicable)

  15. Money • ATM card (Call the bank prior to departure to alert them of the trip; foreign • purchases sometimes result in a hold on bank accounts.) • EF Visa Travel card or personal credit card • At least $50 converted to foreign currency of the first county that you’re visiting • Pouch for storing money and passport under clothing (available at travel stores)

  16. Electronics • An alarm clock (many hotel rooms won't have one) • An adaptor/converter (available at travel stores) • Camera with extra batteries or chargers (Batteries can be expensive abroad.)

  17. Documents • Passport—it is required on all EF Educational Tours. Remember to bring a couple • photocopies of it (in case it is lost) and leave one copy at home • Visas (if applicable) • A copy of the tour itinerary • A list of important phone numbers and addresses to send postcards home • Copy of any prescriptions (Customs officials may want to verify that a container's contents match its label, so all medication should be carried in its original container.)

  18. Carry-on bag The EF backpack is a perfect carry-on bag. Here’s a short list of things travelers might need on the first day of the trip. These should be packed in the carry-on in case the checked luggage is delayed. • Passport • Money • Airline ticket • Toothbrush and toothpaste (Check tsa.gov for current security requirements.) • Hairbrush • Contact lens case/glasses (to sleep comfortably on the plane) • A change of clothes (in case luggage is delayed) • Medication • Any valuables

  19. Food Students should expect food and portion size to be different than what they are accustomed to in the United States. Breakfast typically includes cereal, bread or rolls, jam, juice, coffee and tea. Lunch is a chance to make culinary discoveries of your own. Included dinners will be a mix of familiar dishes and local specialties. Your group will receive a pre-set meal rather than ordering from a menu. Please talk to your tour director about your options.

  20. Spending money suggestions EF recommends bringing the equivalent of $50 in the currency of your arrival destination. Travelers should obtain this amount of local currency before the tour so they have it with them when they arrive. Plan on budgeting approximately $40 to $60 per day for spending money. Do not bring travelers' checks since they are difficult to cash. ATMs are the most convenient method for cash withdrawals. All travelers should check with their banks to ensure their cards and current passwords will work abroad.

  21. Questions • Phone cards • Code of Conduct • School Rules Apply • Weather • Tropical
