Action Movie Conventions • Clearly defined hero, victim, and villain • Hero's object of desire is to stop the villain and save the victim. • Power divide between hero and villain is large. • Fast paced • Lots of fight sequences, rescues, car chases, explosions and crashes. • Stunts • Killings: death of loved ones • Futuristic cars, cars, motorcycles • Weapons- knives and guns • Destruction • Mission to be completed • Big city- Modern

Comedy Movie Conventions • Light hearted • Designed to amuse and provoke laughter (with one-liners and jokes) by exaggerating language, situations, actions, characters and relationships. • The main protagonists, often 2-4 different characters that are different ( the leader, the idiot, the worrier). • The villain, often someone who has something that belongs to the protagonist. • The person in charge that gives orders to the protagonist an often gets annoyed with them. • The person that the protagonist meets during the story. They may seem good at first but commonly end up being bad. • Good against bad • Idiocy • Friendship  • Conflict • Tend to be a lot of establishing shots to show changed locations, characters and new themes. • Common props including beer bottles etc • Often set in suburban areas in places such as high schools and bars.

Romance Movie Conventions • Love interest • Aimed at a female audience • Boy meets girl • Emotional feelings • Sexuality • Status • Gender and relationships • Usually use symbols of love like hearts • Flowers • Wedding bells • Hints throughout the movie that they will end up together or live happily ever after • Characters will often go their separate ways because of an argument or disagreement but will then eventually find their way back to each other • There are usually 2 main protagonists that fall in love and the movie is based on their relationship. There is also usually an antagonist who tries to get in the way or break up the main love interest. It can be a jealous boy or a father who doesn’t want them to be together. A lot of the time there is also a gay best friend. Often the characters will be teenagers or in their young twenties.

  8. Sub Genres • A Sub genre is a sub category within a particular genre. Action sub genres: War and military Action Spy and espionage Action Martial arts Action Comedy sub genres: Screwball  Slapstick Spoofs Parodies Musical comedy Black comedy Romance sub genres: Contemporary romance Historical romance Romantic suspense Inspirational romance Speculative romance Young adult

  9. Hybrid Genres • Hybrid genres are a mix of two genres for example RomCom (Romance and Comedy). It combines two or more genres within the same movie. Action hybrid genres: Action Adventure Action Comedy Action Crime Action Drama Action Horror Action Thriller Science fiction Action Comedy hybrid genres: RomCom Action Comedy Comedy Horror Comic Science Fiction Comedy Drama Camic Fantasy Romance Hybrid genres: RomCom Fantasy Romance Romance Thiller Romance Drama
