  2. Folklore • Usually in the oral tradition (passed on by word of mouth) • Folk is any group of people who share at least one common factor • Created to fill some type of need, over time that need may change and the tale is modified

  3. Functions of Folklore • Validation (validates certain aspects of culture, justifies rituals) • Integration (helps groups stay together, expresses social conformity) • To help explain something that the people cannot explain due to lack of science • Educate (teach history, cultural norms)

  4. Fairytale • Kind of folktale or fable • Fantasy creatures • Almost always include an element of magic and good triumphing over evil

  5. Fables • Short story, typically with animals or characters, includes a moral

  6. What do fables, folklore and fairytales have in common? • They are present in every culture. • They give us insight into cultures. • Explains how similar and how different cultures are
