Classification system MYP1 – Science 1st of February 2013
Topic of today • Topic: The modern classification system – the order of taxa in biology • Learning goals: • After todays lesson you will be able to: • describe the taxonomic classification system • list the different taxa in the correct order using a mnemonic • explain what is meant by each of the levels in the taxonomic classification system
Classification • Why do we classify? • Why do we classify living things into groups?
Modern classification system • In the 18th century Carl Linnaeus started the modern system of putting species of organism into certain groups and giving them scientific names. • Scientific names in Latin words • Example: human beings = 'Homo sapiens'. • Putting different species into different groups according to their features is called classification
The three domain classification system • Starts with dividing organisms in 3 groups, the domains. • Domain Bacteria • Domain Archaea • Domain Eukarya (or Eukaryotes)
Kingdoms • There are 6 kingdoms. • The 4 kingdoms belonging to Eukaryotes are: • Protists • Fungi • Plants • Animals
The subgroups • Each of these kingdoms is divided into several smaller groups: • The phyla (one phylum, two phyla). • The phyla are divided into several classes. • Classes are divided into orders. • Orders are divided into families. • Families into genuses. • Genusesare divided into several species.
A mnemonic Dear King Philip Came Over For Great Spaghetti • Domain • Kingdom • Phylum • Class • Order • Family • Genus • Species • Dear • King • Philip • Came • Over • For • Great • Spaghetti
Assignment • Make a mnemonic device for remembering the different levels of biological taxonomy (Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order,Family, Genus, Species) • For example: • Dumb Kids Prefer Chips Over Filthy Green spinach • Dear King Philip Came Over For Great stories
Scientific names • The last two, the genus and the species, are used as the scientific name for an organism. • We write the genus name starting with a CAPITAL letter and both the genus name and species name is printed italic. binomial nomenclature. • The scientific name for humans is Homo sapiens. The scientific name for a tiger is Pantheratigris.
Questions • Will there be more organisms in a class or in a family? Why? • Tim says: Two organisms can be in the same order evenwhen they are not in the same kingdom. Anna says: Two organisms can be in the same kingdom even when they are not in the same order. Who is right? Why?
Finding NemoPresentation Project • You must choose an animal from the movie “Finding Nemo” and create a presentation on this animal. Complete the following instructions: • You must complete the classification of your animal and give at least two descriptors for each group. • You must explain why your animal is considered a living organism. Use the mnemonic MRS. NERG to help you. You can also use pictures to help you prove your point, but this is not a necessity. • You have to do some research on your animal of choice and find at least 5 interesting facts about your animal. For instance, where it lives, what it eats etc. • You must include your sources. Cite the pages where you found your information. Use at least 4 different sources.
