  1. Picking a Book

  2. Tools that can help you pick a book • Tools in the LMTC (book displays, signage) • Tools built into our library catalog (keyword searching, Lexile searching, visual searching, using cross-references, using Titlepeek, and using your account to create book lists and place holds)

  3. Book Selection Tools in the LMTC • Book Displays • Usually 2-3 thematic book displays scattered around the room • Newer books are often up on top of the shelves being displayed • You are always welcome and encouraged to take books from the displays – this is a library, not a museum! 

  4. Book Selection Tools in the LMTC • Posted Book lists • Fiction area (these lists are also on the LMTC website) • Newbery Award Winners list • “The Classics” list • Multicultural list • Non-Fiction area • Book lists grouped by Dewey number

  5. Book Selection Tools in the LMTC • Posted fiction genre guides • Author suggestions • Hint: In the Fiction area, if you know the author, you know where to find the books! • Keyword suggestions • Hint: combine just about any word with the word Fiction to get fiction books about that subject

  6. Book Selection Tools in theDestiny Library Catalog • About Destiny • Online library catalog – destiny.waunakee.k12.wi.us • Access at school or from home over the Internet • Log in with your username and password for additional features

  7. Book Selection Tools in theDestiny Library Catalog • Keyword Searching • Combine just about any word with the word Fiction to get fiction books on that topic. Examples: • Baseball fiction • Survival fiction • Mystery fiction • Wisconsin fiction • Dogs fiction

  8. Book Selection Tools in theDestiny Library Catalog • Visual Searching • On the Catalog screen, click the Visual tab • Of particular interest: Fiction Genres, New Books, Audiobooks, Newbery Books, the Classics, Books by Lexile, and Quick Reads • Use different sorting methods for different purposes (gather fiction together, gather authors together, arrange by year to get newer books at the top, etc.)

  9. Book Selection Tools in theDestiny Library Catalog • Lexile Searching • On the Visual Tab select Books by Lexile, then pick a Lexile range. • You can sort the resulting list by Lexile as well. • Remember: Lexile is just one measure of difficulty – it only measures vocabulary, not writing style, length, or other things that can affect difficulty • Remember: Many of our books don’t have Lexile codes

  10. Book Selection Tools in theDestiny Library Catalog • Using Titlepeek • Titlepeek is the service that feeds Destiny the cover pictures • You can click the cover pictures to go to the Titlepeek site for that book • You can sometimes find summaries, reviews, and even sample chapters

  11. Book Selection Tools in theDestiny Library Catalog • Using subject and author cross-references • Start with a book you know you liked • Look in the Explore! Area to find subject headings and author headings • These may be clickable links – they link you to other items that have the same headings • Again, you can use Sorting to help group fiction/non-fiction, authors, or dates

  12. Book Selection Tools in theDestiny Library Catalog • Using your account • You can log on with your normal username and password. Why? • Check your account – what items do you have out, when are they due, and what is overdue? • Create a list of books you have read, or want to read • Items that are currently checked out can be put on hold so you get to read them when returned • Rate books 1-5 stars and write reviews
