  2. April 19, 1775 The war begins when British soldiers and colonial militia exchange fire at Lexington and Concord.

  3. June 17, 1775 The British defeat the Americans in the Battle of Bunker Hill near Boston.

  4. July 4, 1776 The Declaration of Independence adopted.

  5. December26, 1776 Washington’s troops cross the Delaware River and surprise the enemy at Trenton, New Jersey, giving the Continental army its first major victory.

  6. October 17, 1777 Americans defeat the British in the Battle of Saratoga in New York. France enters the war to aid the Americans.

  7. Winter 1777 Washington’s troops spend a cold winter camped at Valley Forge in Pennsylvania

  8. June 28, 1778 At the Battle of Monmouth in New York, neither side claims a victory.

  9. December 29, 1778 The British capture Savannah, Georgia.

  10. September 23, 1779 John Paul Jones’s crew captures the British ship Serapis.

  11. January 17, 1781 Americans defeat the British at Cowpens, South Carolina.

  12. October 19, 1781 British General Cornwallis surrenders to Washington at Yorktown, Virginia.

  13. September 3, 1783 The British and Americans sign a final peace treaty in Paris, France.
