Getting Started • Use your outline to help guide you • Don’t get caught up on the 1st sentence & Intro. • Use your thesis as the intro & start the body instead of wasting time • Just start writing! Don’t worry about the little details • Get your research & quotes down along with your ideas • We can clean it up later, most important to get the MAIN IDEAS first • With each story you’re using in the thesis make sure you: • Introduce/setup the plot & how it will fit into your theme and thesis • Break it down into different examples from story that prove thesis • Then begin to write…each example should be a diff. paragraph • Use your research to fit in where it works best with the examples

Using quotations • Too many quotes can overpower & distract • No more than 2 per paragraph • Quotes should fit into your argument not appear out of thin air • Introduce quotes with your own words • Only use sentences, passages, or words that are memorable or powerful. Quotes should be brilliant comments, controversial statements, statistics, or info. To strengthen argument. • DO NOT JUST USE ANY OLD LINE FROM RESEARCH OR TEXTS! • If quotation is long try to paraphrase it (still have to cite it)

Using Quotations • How to make the quote work smoothly with the writing: • Instead of boring your reader with this:The narrator says, "Who can even imagine me looking a strange white man in the eye?" (232) • Write something like this:The narrator asks if anyone could imagine her "looking a strange white man in the eye" (232) • And this: At one point the mother says, "I used to think [Dee] hated Maggie, too" (233) • Is not as good an integration as this:At one point the mother admits that she "used to think [Dee] hated Maggie, too" (233)

  5. Using Quotations • To integrate a quotation within a paragraph properly: • Write one sentence to introduce the quote • A second sentence that includes the quote • A third sentence to comment on the significance of the quote
