Honors Geometry Unit 1 - Transformations
Welcome to Honors Geometry! • As you find your seat, begin working on your Student Info sheet. • When finished, read through the syllabus
Syllabus • Let’s look at it together…
Classroom Procedure: Warm Ups • Each day will start with a Warm Up posted on the board. • Warm ups should be completed on a loose leaf piece of paper and stored in your binder. • Multiple Warm Ups can be answered on page as long as each is clearly marked with the date. • Warm Ups must be stored in chronological order.
Classroom Procedure: Homework • You will each have an individual Homework Stamp Sheet • Your Homework Stamp Sheet must be in the Homework section of your Geometry Binder. • At the beginning of each class, while working on your Warm Up, I will walk around to check your Homework and mark your Stamp Sheet • Homework is graded by completion. (100%, 50%, 0%). Late Homework will not be accepted but is required for your binder.
Classroom Expectations • Be Respectful • Be Responsible • Participate What do these look like?
All KHS policies will also be enforced • Please remove hats before entering the classroom. • Thank you for respecting my time and keeping your cell phone turned off/in your locker/at home. • Please finish all food and drinks (except water) in the hall before coming in the classroom.
Unit 1 - Transformations • Essential Questions • What is a transformation? • What are different ways the four types of transformations can be represented? • Today’s Objectives • Introduction to class/procedures • Introduce transformations • Investigate translations
Transformation • A transformation of a geometric figure is a change in its position, shape, or size. • The preimageis… the original figure. (Denoted by A) • The image is… the figure after a transformation. (A’ of “A prime”)
Isometry • An isometry is a transformation in which the preimage and image are congruent • What does it mean to be congruent? • Two figures are congruent if they have the exact same size and shape (≅)
Arrow Notation A A’ means point A becomes A’
Group Work – Translation Worksheet • Read through the directions carefully • If you do not understand the directions, first talk with your group, then ask for help Worksheet
Translation • A translation is an isometry (transformation) that slides all points of a figure a fixed distance in the same direction (a slide) Why is it an isometry?
Vector Notation • Vector notation to write rules of transformations. Vector: describes a slide written x = left/right y = up/down
Pre-image Image Describes a translation of a horizontal units (+ Right, - Left) b vertical units (+ Up, - Down) Formulizing Algebraic Rules
1. On one side of your graph paper, draw lines to split your page into three parts 2. In section 1, draw a preimage and create an algebraic rule so that your partner can create the image. 3. In section 2, draw a preimage and a translated image so that your partner can describe the algebraic rule. 4. In section 3, draw an IMAGE and create an algebraic rule so that your neighbor can create the PREIMAGE. (hint: you need to work backwards!!) Partner Practice.
Homework • Practice 12-2 • Take home your Syllabus and a Parent Info sheet • Have your parent/guardian read and sign the syllabus and fill out the info sheet. • Return these SIGNED tomorrow • Keep the syllabus in your binder
