  1. ChemistryAcids and BasespH, pOH Periodic Tables Required CALCULATORS REQUIRED

  2. What is pH? Low pH (1-6) – acid High pH (8-14) – base pH of 7 – neutral (water) Acid Strength: pH

  3. What does pH mean? pH stands for “potential hydrogen”, or a measure of how much H+ or H3O+there is in solution. pH = -log[H+] or –log[H3O+] [H+] = 10-pH [H+] = concentration of hydrogen Brackets: molar concentration of that substance. Acid Strength: pH

  4. Just like pH measures the potential hydrogen, pOH is the same measure for base pOH = -log[OH-] [OH-] = 10-pOH Has the same scale as pH (1-14), except that 1-6 is basic, and 8-14 is acidic. Base Strength: pOH

  5. Water is neutral pH = 7, pOH = 7 For all acid or base solutions in water… pH + pOH = 14 If pH = 3, what is pOH? 11 pH = 7, what is [H+]? [OH-]? 1 x 10-7 M for both [H+][OH-] = 1 x 10-14 Relationship Between pH and pOH

  6. [H+] = 10-pH [OH-] = 10-pOH [H+][OH-] = 1.0 x 10-14 pH = -log[H+] pOH = -log[OH-] pH + pOH = 14 Formula Summary
