Generic records • No detailed subject headings • Inconsistent authority control • Incorrect/incomplete MARC records • Not provider neutral • URLs • Not stable • Invalid • No URLs • Duplication Challenges of Vendor-supplied Records
Add proxy string • URLs • Remove multiple links occasionally • Edit 856 |z field Changes Needed for OCLC’s Records
View records and count fields (especially 856 fields) • Identify syntax errors (using “Validate” function) • Customize URLs • Delete invalid URLs/restricted URLs • Delete URLS not linked to full text • Add proxy strings • Edit subfield z information • Add local information if necessary • Edit match point for record loading as “alpha numeric vendor control number in MARC 001” (this step is no longer necessary) Batch Process Records in MarcEdit
Solution: Step 1: add a preprocessing error log for the process "Load MARC or BIB Records (BTA) Step 2: Edit records in MARCedit Got message : NUMBER OF INPUT RECORDS - 2 NUMBER OF ERRORS - 4 ( use -el flag to see messages ) NUMBER OF INVALID RECORDS - 2 Tip 1: Error Log
Set the system match point for record loading as “alpha numeric vendor control number in MARC001” • Keep MARC001 consistent • To avoid duplicate records • For statistics purpose Tip 2 : Set Match Point
Simplify the work associated with cataloging • Records are more accurate • Increase the number of titles available via OPAC Tip 4 : Separated Records for Print & Electronic
MarcEdit is a powerful tool in managing MARC records • Vendors’ records require manipulation • Vendors’ records are inconsistent in quality • E-books could be unreliable. Lesson we learned
