  1. Properties of Addition Identity Property Commutative Property Associative Property

  2. Identity Property When you add a zero to any number, the sum is that same as that number. 3 + 0 = 3 7 + 0 = 7 86 + 0 = 86

  3. Commutative Property • Turn around facts • Comes from the word commute, which means to go back and forth. • The digits change their order, but the answer stays the same! 2 + 3 = 5, 3 + 2 = 5 66 + 11 = 77, 11 + 66 = 77

  4. Associative Property • To associate means to group numbers together (with parenthesis). • Always do the problem in the parenthesis FIRST! • The digits stay the same, but are grouped together differently. • The answer is always the same! 850 + (1 + 10) = 861 5 + (6 +3) = 14 10 + (1 + 850) = 861 (3+5) + 6 = 14
