  1. Jurassic Park

  2. Directed by Steven Spielberg • Most recently directed Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull • Novel and Script by Michael Crichton • Also wrote TV series E.R. • Starred Sam Neill as Dr. Grant • Most recently in The Daybreakers • Starred Laura Dern as Dr. Sattler • Will be starring in Little Fockers • Starred Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Malcolm • Starring now in Law & Order: Criminal Intent • Starred Richard Attenborough as John Hammond • Also starred in the sequel The Lost World • Budget was $65 million • Opening weekend it made over $50 • mil. And grossed over $350 mil.

  3. William Hurt was offered role of Dr. Grant as well as Harrison Ford. • This was Attenborough’s first acting role in 15 years. • Crichton’s book circulated through six studios and directors before getting picked up. • Tim Burton and Richard Donner both wanted to direct it at times. • The glass on the dashboard of the SUV was made to ripple by using a guitar string attached to the underside of the dash covered by glass. • Spielberg was worried the CG would like a computer game so he only wanted the herd of Gallimimus’ only to be CG. • ILM convinced Spielberg with their demo of the T-Rex chasing a herd of Galamides. • Any Shot of a full dinosaur was CG while parts of dinosaurs were animatronics.

  4. The full-sized Tyrannosaurus weighed 13,000 – 15,000 pounds • A scene that got cut had the kids riding a baby Tyrannosaurus, which took the FX techs a year to build. • In the egg scene the dinosaur that emerged was supposed to be a Triceratops but was changed to a Velociraptor. • So many wires during the kitchen stalking scene for the dinos that the kids had to step over and around them as it filmed. • Many errors corrected digitally but some stunt people were made to look like the actors. (You can see one in the ceiling scene) • This was the first film to use DTS digital surround sound. • To study the Gallimimus herd the films digital artists had to run a stretch of road with some obstacles with their hands on their chest.

  5. The pilot flying them off Kauai was the same pilot from the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark. • Spielberg was so confident with the film that he started making Schindler’s List and left post production to George Lucas. • Spielberg directed Attenborough, who had beat him for best director when he did E.T. (Attenborough won for Ghandi). • Spielberg originally wanted the raptors to be ten feet tall but scientists said that they weren’t that tall. • Then while filming a fossil of a ten foot tall raptor was discovered. • Juliette Binoche ( Dan In Real Life) offered role of Dr. Sattler. • HurricanIniki hit Kauai during filming and movie was delayed.

  6. Only scene not shot on Kauai was when the Rex jumped out and ate the Gallimimus which was shot on Oahu. • All the merchandise in the film was, in some part, actually created to be sold. • Spielberg originally wanted stop motion photography to animate the dinosaurs. • Helicopter used in the film was later involved in a crash in Hawaii. • Briefly held box office record until Titanic came out. • In original ending Grant was going to use the skeleton of the Rex in the lobby as a marionette to crush the Raptors. • Film and book generated so much interest in paleontology that schools saw a record increase in students pursuing the profession.
