  1. Interworking of IP Multimedia Core Networks Between 3GPP and WLAN IEEE Wireless Communications 2005 Presenter : 卓瑩鎗

  2. Outline • Introduction • IMS architecture for 3GPP networks • (SIP WLAN MeGaCo ….) • Interworking model and scenarios • SIP 3GPP-IETF Interworking • Conclusions • Impression& English sentence

  3. Introduction • 3GPP ? UMTS ? WLAN ? • This article analyzes how the interconnection of 3GPP and WLAN networks may be performed in order to support different levels of service interconnection. • ITU-H.323 IETF-SIP 3GPP-IMS

  4. IMS Architecture for 3GPP Networks • IMS (Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem) • security • accounting • roaming • QoS • etc..

  5. UMTS-IMS general architecture

  6. component • MRFC (Multimedia Resource Function Controller) • MRFP (Multimedia Resource Function Processor) • MGCF • HSS • AS • UTRAN

  7. Protocol • SIP (session initiation protocol) • H.248 (MeGaCo) • COPS (Common Object Policy Service) • Diameter

  8. GPRS

  9. 3GPP-WLAN interworking model

  10. WLAN • 802.11x,Bluetooth,HyperLan,WiMAX • Advantage : mobility.. • picomobility • micromobility • macromobility • Disadvantage 1. Qos 2. Security(risk higher than 3GPP UTRAN)

  11. Interworking model and scenarios • Release6 : first three levels • 1. basic, customer service • 2. 3GPP • 3. IMS to WLAN, re-establish • 4. Handover(data loss,delay) • 5. no noticeable service interruption

  12. Interconnection levels

  13. SIP : 3GPP vs IETF • SIP is an extensible protocol. • Although the aim of 3GPP is to incorporate Internet standards unchanged, the existing differences between mobile and fixed networks have necessitated additions or modifications such that the IETF specifications fulfill the needs of 3GPP.

  14. 3GPP SIP Functionalities (I) • General Extensions • Session Operation Extensions • QoS-Related Extensions

  15. 3GPP SIP Functionalities (II) • AAAC Related Extensions • Security Extensions

  16. 3GPP SIP Functionalities (III) • Universal Decompression Virtual Machine • IPSec • header • Precondition • BYE • etc..

  17. Conclusions • SIP is the IMS key signaling protocol. • SIP/SDP may be freely extended so, It’s difficult to Implementation • It’s important to evaluate IMS deployment when dealing with lv5 regarding seamless service continuity.

  18. Impression&English Sentence • Conciseness • Extracurricular • WLANs are commonly used to transport IP packets. 3GPP WLAN interworking should thus be built on top of the IP Protocol, and not be limited to any specific WLAN technology

  19. Reference

  20. 3GPP specification
