  5. Myths of RPT • Extension/engagement doesn’t count, just research (and maybe teaching) • All that matters is pubs and bucks • Just keep pumping stuff out from your dissertation • They don’t read, they just count • I just got tenure, so here’s how to do it… • When I was your age…

  6. Truths of RPT • We do it well at NC State • Faculty survey: • 85% think procedures are fair and consistent • 77% think standards are fair and consistent • National survey: • In top 4 of 31 doctoral universities • Clarity of process, criteria and standards • Clarity of expectations • Cited as a national model for RPT

  7. Process for RPT UNC System University College Department Your Appointment and SME Website: http://www.provost.ncsu.edu/ promotion-tenure/

  8. Process for RPT University Policy: Scholarlycontributions in an appropriate mix of these six realms must be -- both in fact and in faculty perceptions -- the principal criteria for decisions about faculty reappointment, promotion, and tenure. Practice is not enough.

  9. Process for RPT University Policy: • demonstrated professional competence in the appropriate mix of the realms of responsibility • potential for future contributions • service to the university, the academic community, and society • the needs and resources of the university

  10. Process for RPT Realms of Faculty Responsibility: • Teaching and Mentoring of Undergraduate and Graduate Students • Discovery of Knowledge through Discipline-Guided Inquiry • Creative Artistry and Literature • Technological and Managerial Innovation • Extension and Engagement outside the University • Service in Professional Societies and Service and Engagement within the University Itself

  11. Process for RPT Joint Committee on the Scholarship of Extension and Engagement (2004): …is creative, collaborative intellectual inquiry with outcomes that are relevant, affordable, applied, communicated, validated and evaluated by peers.

  12. Process for RPT Statement of Mutual Expectations (SME): Defines your expectations • Translates letter of offer into performance features • Negotiated between you and department head • Must be finished in first 12 months (signed by both) • Guides all reviews (annual, reappointment, tenure, promotion, and post-tenure)

  13. Scholarship Cycle for RPT Generate idea Attract support Attract graduate student Produce something! Graduate student Peer acceptance

  14. Process for RPT If you aren’t thriving… • Talk to your department head – NOW • Consult your mentors • Ask for an extension • Make sure your head and heart are working together • Get into Quadrant II – and stay there!

  15. Quadrant II for RPT From Stephen Covey: Urgent Not Urgent Quadrant II Important Not Important

  16. Thrival Skills for RPT • Engage your department head — regularly • Consult your SME — regularly • Seek mentor(s) – the right ones • Get the dissertation out — then leave it • Build a “portfolio of improvement” • Live in Quadrant II
