  1. Panel Discussion On Roadmap of Neutrino Physics H. Haseroth H. Haseroth July 26 – August 1, 2004 NuFact04, Osaka

  2. Well, for a road map you better be in another region… H. Haseroth July 26 – August 1, 2004 NuFact04, Osaka

  3. NuFact04 26/07/04 Round table on road map: • Alain’s questions: • 1) How many steps on the ladder to a nu-factory • 2) I (personally) hate theta 1,3… (prefer talk by Ann E. Nelson) • 3) What are the pre-requisites to decide that a Neutrino Factory can be built? H. Haseroth July 26 – August 1, 2004 NuFact04, Osaka

  4. Let me comment on road maps… • Road maps smell like 5 year plans in the old Soviet Union - as everybody knows they have been highly successful and there is now a tendency here to follow this good example... H. Haseroth July 26 – August 1, 2004 NuFact04, Osaka

  5. Sometimes road maps are somewhat difficult… H. Haseroth July 26 – August 1, 2004 NuFact04, Osaka

  6. A road map implies that there are roads, but if we want to move from point A to point B: We will also need some means to move on the roads! H. Haseroth July 26 – August 1, 2004 NuFact04, Osaka

  7. Our means of transport: Need some money! Need some detectors… H. Haseroth July 26 – August 1, 2004 NuFact04, Osaka

  8. AND: which road to take? What about European roads? • I shall talk about the "continental Europe”.... H. Haseroth July 26 – August 1, 2004 NuFact04, Osaka

  9. What have we been doing? • Neutrino Factory Working Group (CERN + other European Labs) with good contacts with US + Japan • Study on cooling: 44/88 MHz scenario with bunch to bunch transfer • Built a 88 MHz cavity, not yet tested, no solenoids • Experimental work on targets with BNL, Grenoble etc. Proton beams on Hg thimble and Hg jets H. Haseroth July 26 – August 1, 2004 NuFact04, Osaka

  10. Now: CERN dropped out, but ENG, EU (Rob explained details): Road map: yes, you may spot where is our point A, but there is no agreement where is point B. I personally like some chaotic situation, it can be very stimulating, but: this is only true when we have enough people and resources, otherwise nobody will go anywhere. H. Haseroth July 26 – August 1, 2004 NuFact04, Osaka

  11. An answer to Alain’s question 1: One possible road map to a nu-factory (CERN biased): • Start with the SPL (preferably perhaps with a higher energy than 2.2 GeV) Make a Superbeam (incl. target + horn) biased towards Frejus (now discussions about tunnel size...) Do R&D on FFAGs + cooling Then accelerate + store the muons… H. Haseroth July 26 – August 1, 2004 NuFact04, Osaka

  12. Story of an Irishman, who was asked by a tourist about the best way to go to Dublin: After a long reflection and after some time came the answer: This sometimes reminds me of the H. Haseroth July 26 – August 1, 2004 NuFact04, Osaka

  13. Well, if I were you, I wouldn't start from here... H. Haseroth July 26 – August 1, 2004 NuFact04, Osaka

  14. An answer to Alain’s question 3: What are the pre-requisites to decide that a Neutrino Factory can be built? • We do not need any pre-requisites. We can build a Neutrino Factory right now! H. Haseroth July 26 – August 1, 2004 NuFact04, Osaka

  15. Of course it would be preferable in order to increase the performance and to decrease the cost to do an intensive R&D program (FFAGs, Cooling etc…) • Of course we might run into problems like Be windows on rf cavities (might need open cavities) • Lifetime of some irradiated components may not be as we want… Reminder: Also for the LHC the collimator problems showed up pretty late… H. Haseroth July 26 – August 1, 2004 NuFact04, Osaka

  16. And please do not forget the next option of a muon collider! I believe we are not making enough (good?) publicity: If we make some progress in cooling we could build a muon collider! Think about all the effort and money going into the R&D for linear e+e- collider: If we succed with a muon collider e+e- colliders will look obsolete! H. Haseroth July 26 – August 1, 2004 NuFact04, Osaka

  17. Thank you H. Haseroth July 26 – August 1, 2004 NuFact04, Osaka
