  6. Absolute Value • The distance a number is from zero on the number line. Symbols: |2| = the absolute value of 2 Start at 0, count the jumps to 2. -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 It takes two jumps from 0 to 2. |2| = 2

  7. Absolute Value • The distance a number is from zero on the number line. Ex: |-4| = Start at 0, count the jumps to -4. -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 It takes four jumps from 0 to -4. |-4| = 4

  8. Absolute Value is ALWAYS positive because you are measuring distance.

  10. Integer Addition Rules • Rule #2 – If the signs are different pretend the signs aren’t there. Subtract the smaller from the larger one and put the sign of the larger absolute value in front of your answer. -9 + 5 = 9 - 5 =4 Larger absolute Value Answer = - 4
