  1. Jiang Zhu Institute of Atmospheric Physics Chinese Academy of Sciences YEOS Annual meeting and Workshop on Yellow Sea Operational Oceanography 24-25 April 2008, Copenhagen, Denmark A Yellow Sea historical dataset for model validation

  2. Outline • Data server and access • Data subsets XBT profiles SST reports from ship and drifter GODAE high resolution SST products • A evaluation of GHRSST using SST reports

  3. Data server and access Using secure ftp softwares, such as “SSH secure file transfer”

  4. Input the following: IP:159.226.234.19 username: passwd: (contact yeos partner for password)

  5. Data subsets • XBT profiles • SST reports from ship and drifter • GODAE high resolution SST products

  6. XBT profiles • Data source: GTS-PP best XBT (ftp://ftp.nodc.noaa.gov/pub/gtspp/best) • Ftp address: /usr/home/yeos/XBT • Read software: Yes/in FORTRAN • Period: 1994-2003 • Covered region: Yellow Sea.

  7. Locations of XBT during the period of 1994-2003.

  8. The number of XBT during 1994-2003.

  9. SST reports from ship and drifter Data source: NEAR-GOOS (North-East Asian Regional-Global Ocean Observing System) Ftp address: /usr/home/yeos/NEARGOOS File names: “YS_Ship.dat” and “YS_Buoy.dat” Format: ASCⅡ Read software: Yes/in FORTRAN/readme.doc Period: 2005.1-2006.9 Covered region: Yellow Sea.

  10. Locations of reports during the period of 2005.1-2006.9.

  11. Quality control We collected the SST observations in Yellow Sea during the period of from Jan 2005 to Sep 2006. These SST observations are qality controlled by some measures as follows: • Eliminate the redundant SST reports according to time, location, SST, air temperature and wind; • SST reports without a call sign, or with a generic call sign just like “SHIP”, are excluded; • Check the ship positions for consistency at the method of ship tracking (ref. Kent and Challenor, 2006).

  12. GHRSST L4 products • Data source: GHRSST-PP, which includes five Datasets: MGDSST (JMA), MWOISST (RSS), NGSST (UT), OSTIA (NCOF), and FSTIA (FNMOC). ftp://ftp.discover-earth.org/sst/misst/l4/tmi_amsre ftp://www.ocean.caos.tohoku.ac.jp/pub/mergedsst_binary http://godae.kishou.go.jp/doc/mgdsst.html http://ghrsst-pp.metoffice.com/data/SOTIA/index.htm ftp://usgodae1.usgodae.org/pub/outgoing/fnmoc/models/ghrsst • Ftp address: Ftp address: /usr/home/yeos/GHRSST • Read software: Yes/in Fortran & Matlab • Period: 2002.6-2008. 4 • Covered region: Around Yellow Sea (27°N-41°N, 117°E-131°E), Figure 5 shows the regions, the periods and the resolutions of the five Datasets respectively.
