  3. TSM Architecture

  4. TSM server installation steps

  5. Cont…

  6. Start TSM server: • If this is fresh TSM server installation then you have to create the database and recovery log volumes after installation. • You can create db/log volume in two way: 1. TSM Management Console From this console you can complete TSM database configuration and other configurations as well. 2. Command-line Configuration. Ex: tsm\server>dsmserv format 1 c:\logvol 8 1 c:\dbvol 12 • Once the TSM Server log/db volume created, start the TSM server in foreground using ‘dsmserv’ command.

  7. TSM Management console

  8. Client Installation Setup type: Typical installs the minimum necessary to provide normal backup and archive functions. This includes the Backup-Archive Client, the API Runtime files, and the Web Client. Custom takes you to the Custom Setup window. From this window, you can click on any program feature icon to modify that feature if it is not mandatory for installation. You can select from the following program features: – Backup-Archive Client - Backup-Archive Client GUI Files (Mandatory; cannot be deselected) - Backup-Archive Client Web Files (Mandatory; cannot be deselected) - Client API Runtime Files (Mandatory; cannot be deselected) - Client API SDK Files (Optional) - Administrative Client Command Line Files - Image Backup (Optional; not enabled by default) - Open File Support (Optional; not enabled by default

  9. TSM Client Installation.- Default Installation directory C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient Some common config and executable: • dscenu.txt • dsmc.exe (command line client) • dsm.exe (GUI) • dsmcutil.exe • No dsm.opt file is available on fresh installation.

  10. Post Install steps • After successfully installing the Tivoli Storage Manager client, you must configure the client before performing any operations. - If you try to start the TSM client without configuration from command line it gives the following error: C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient>dsmc ANS1035S Options file 'dsm.opt' could not be found - If you run the Tivoli Storage Manager client GUI, if it does not detect an options file, it will automatically launch the configuration wizard to help you create one

  11. TSM Client Configuration • You need to know a few technical details, such as the TCP/IP address of the backup server you will be connecting to and the port it listens on, in order to successfully create your client options file.

  12. Options file (dsm.opt) • If we want to use any existing dsm.opt file then select the second option. If this is fresh install then it will create a new dsm.opt file in install directory. • Click Next

  13. Nodename • It asks for client node name. By default it takes the machine name or hostname. • In shown figure ‘BHARVYAS’ is hostname or machine • In this example I have given the ‘bharat’ as nodename.

  14. Commmethod • Specify the communication protocol necessary to establish communications between your backup client and the backup server. • COMMMethod TCPIP • You use communication options to specify how your client node communicates with a Tivoli Storage Manager server. For all Windows clients, use one of the following protocols: 1. TCP/IP 2. Named Pipes 3. Shared Memory

  15. TCPserveraddress (TCP/IP) and TCPport • Specify the TCP/IP server address of the TSM server you will connect to using the tcpserveraddress option • Specifies the TCP/IP port address that is used to communicate with a server. The range of values is 1000 through 32767; the default is 1500.

  16. Include/Exclude List • The include/exclude list exists to control what files are processed during a backup procedure. • This is an optional task but an important one. If you do not create an include-exclude list, Tivoli Storage Manager considers all files for backup services and uses the default management class for backup and archive services. • You can create an include-exclude list to exclude a specific file or groups of files from backup services, and to assign specific management classes to files. Tivoli Storage Manager backs up any file that is not explicitly excluded. • Example of a include/exclude list. Exclude c:\...\* Include c:\topsecret\...\* Exclude c:\topsecret\secretplan.doc

  17. Domain • The domain statement in the client options file (or TSM server client options set) specifies the drive letters or filesystem mount points to be considered for client processing. • The default option is “all-local.” Examples would include Domain c: d: e: (processes the c, d, and e drive letters) Domain all-local –d: (processes all local drives except the D: drive) Domain /home /usr (processes the /home and /usr filesystem mount points) • When you click on the finish button, it creates a dsm.opt in client install directory. • Now your Client is ready for Backup & Restore operations.

  18. Sample dsm.opt file NODENAME bharat PASSWORDACCESS GENERATE TCPSERVERADDRESS localhost EXCLUDE.BACKUP "*:\microsoft uam volume\...\*" EXCLUDE.BACKUP "*:\microsoft uam volume\...\*.*" EXCLUDE.BACKUP "*:\...\system32\config\...\*" EXCLUDE.BACKUP "*:\...\system32\Perflib*.dat" EXCLUDE.BACKUP "*:\...\system32\dhcp\...\*" INCLUDE.BACKUP "*:\...\system32\dhcp\backup\...\*"

  19. Installation completed • Now both client and server are installed • Run the ‘query node’ command from TSM server admin client and check whether client node is register on server • If the node ‘bharat’ is not registered on TSM server then first register this node using following command: - register node <node_name> <password>
