  1. Opening Notes for Study in the Book of Acts

  2. Opening Notes • The big idea of the Book of Acts is “the orchestrated power of the progressive witness of the church.” • You might like to know that for a quiz, or exam!

  3. Attitudes and Apparatuses:The Integration of Faith and Learning • What is faith? It is not a thing. Faith is something “relational”. • What is learning? Learning is not a thing. Learning is something participational. • Jonathan Edwards wrote that love as a relational reality of God is both rich and irreducible and, as such, it defies definition.

  4. Key Feature: Read Relationally • God’s confrontation was never meant to drive away his beloved bride, but to chasten her. He refuses to abandon the one he loves. Instead he sent the servant Son to capture her heart . . . to restore her affections. God’s compassion comes to the fore: “For your Maker is your husband, the LORD of hosts is his name.

  5. Key Feature: The Imagery of Scriptures • The Church as… • the body • the building • the household, or family, or citizens • the sheep • the vine • priest • the bride.

  6. Key Feature: Humility - Part 1 • Always remember this: both the proud and the truly humble are ambitious—the presence of an ambition is not where the difference is found. Instead, the key question of life is this: what is our greatest ambition and the aim of that ambition? Is it selfish or selfless? The ambition of the selfless soul touches eternity, but the selfish soul dies as a wisp of empty vanity that fades to nothing.

  7. Key Feature: Humility - part 2 • C.S. Lewis discovered that joy evaporates the moment that experience was made to be the focus. Finally he realized that joy was not a “something” but a response to “someone” . . . and from that point on he was on his way to embracing Christ as the source of joy.

  8. Key Feature: Faith • The captivating response of the affections to the person and word of God who fully assures us that He loves us and that He, who is love, draws us into a fully redeemed relationship where our thoughts, words, and deeds denote a response to the consistency of God.”

  9. Key Feature: Five Approaches to Reading Scripture

  10. Key Feature: How Can We Read and Study the Scriptures? Research • Understanding the context as fully as possible • Write down multiple observations • In light of many observations come to an interpretation; inc. verification by other recognized Bible students • Attempt to state a principle, or timeless truth Reflect Response • Respond in application • Interact with others about what you have learned

  11. Key Feature: A Word on What is Known as Inductive Bible Study • Be thorough, but seek the obvious most simple observation.

  12. OT Overview: A Look Back at the Tanakh • Torah, Nevi'imand Ketuvim • Patriarchs, • Priests, • Moses • Joshua, • Judges, • Prophets, Kings

  13. Conclusion • We’ve gone through the syllabus • We’ve gone through the opening notes on the Book of Acts • Next week come prepared for your first pop-quiz • Make sure you’ve read Acts chapter 1 (at least)!
