  2. Meeting Agenda 9:00 – 9:05: Welcome 9:05 – 9:20: Past Salmon Falls TMDL Monitoring 9:20 – 9:45: Monitoring in 2012 9:45 – 9:55: Salmon Falls Watershed Collaborative 9:55 – 10:25: Future Monitoring 10:25 – 10:30: Conclusions, Next Steps

  3. Total Maximum Daily Load • 1999 TMDL • Cites data and modeling that show impairment • Calculates allowable pollutant loads • 2000 Work Plan, revised 2006, outlines this monitoring Link to ME DEP TMDL pageFor report, see “Salmon Falls” headinghttp://www.maine.gov/dep/water/monitoring/tmdl/tmdl2.html

  4. Map • Seven locations • Bracketing all plants, plus Great Works R. and an estuarine site • Four are in impoundments

  5. Water Quality Criteria NH & ME Freshwater and tidal Based on Designated Uses & Class

  6. July – August Grab Sampling • Seven sample locations • Some impoundments, some free-flowing • Parameters vary by site

  7. July – August Grab Sampling • All sites: phosphorus (TP &ortho-P), pH, DO, Temp • Selected sites: chlorophyll-a, ammonia, nitrate+nitrite, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, transparency • Salinity at tidal sites

  8. 114 cfs • Low flow, check for <114 cfs at Milton 3 Ponds dam • Last sample taken by 8 am for low dissolved oxygen

  9. July – August Grab Sampling • Sample collection by boat • Delivered within hours to ME Health and Environmental Lab (HETL) • Concerns about detection limit

  10. Continuous Dissolved Oxygen Monitoring by ME DEP • Data sondes at SF16, SF7 • Based on 38 MRSA §464.13 (2003): • Ignore bottom 0.5m • Thermally stratified waters exempt • Barry, please chime in

  11. Continuous Dissolved Oxygen Monitoring by ME DEP • ME DEP policy, measure 1st meter below thermocline • Depth where temp changes by 1°C /m of depth • Thermocline is mobile

  12. Continuous Dissolved Oxygen Monitoring by ME DEP • ME DEP policy, measure 1st meter below thermocline • Depth where temp changes by 1°C /m of depth • Thermocline is mobile

  20. 2012 Monitoring Plan • Three dates, mid July - August • Same sites, parameters at low flow, early AM • ME DEP lends data sondes • FBE adjusts sondes based on thermocline More information online: http://www.fbenvironmental.com/project_salmonfalls.html
