‘The husband is the head of the wife’. Eph 5:23

Wrong concepts of male headship:

  • No where in the Bible is the husband commanded to exercise headship over his wife!
  • Headship is never a means for the husband to get his own way!
  • Headship is not the power of a superior over an inferior.
  • Headship doesn’t mean that the husband has to make every decision in the home!
slide5

‘The husband is the head of the wife’. Eph 5:23

So what is headship?

“The divine calling on a man to take primary responsibility to lead his wife and family into the fullness of Christian maturity and to love them like Christ loved the church”.

(Sam Storms)

So what is headship?

  • Headship is more a responsibility than a right!
  • Headship is the authority to serve
slide7

‘If headship means power in any sense then it is power to care not to crush, power to serve not to dominate, to facilitate other self fulfilment, not to frustrate or destroy it, and in all this the standard of the husbands love is to be the cross of Christ on which he surrendered himself to death for love of his bride’.

John Stott (Theologian)
