  2. Criminal Cases • Involve aperson violating specific state laws or felonies

  3. Civil Cases • Involve a legal dispute over property and rights

  4. Judicial Cases • Divided into criminal and civil cases • Criminal cases are divided into 2 groups: -Felonies -Misdemeanors • Criminal cases first tried in the court of limited jurisdiction • The civil case that has a dispute of $10,000 or less is tried in the court of limited jurisdiction.

  5. Courts of Limited Jurisdiction • Have the jurisdiction over cases involving lesser civil disputes and criminal offenses • Exists in all counties of Washington

  6. Superior Courts • There are 30 superior courts in Washington with 174 judges • The judges have a four year term • No limit on the types of civil and criminal offenses • Authority to hear cases appealed by courts of limited jurisdiction

  7. Courts of Appeal • Washington's second highest court • They hear civil and criminal cases of lower courts • They can overturn 2 lower court decisions

  8. Supreme Court • Washington's highest court, located in Olympia • 9 justices are elected for a 6 year term • Only three justices can be re-elected every 2 years • The one justice with the least amount of time on the term is selected to be supreme court chief
