Digital Libraries Initiative of the European Union The Digital Libraries iIitiative is part of the European Community's i2010 strategy for the Digital Economy It focuses on two areas: cultural heritage and scientific information: 2006: Council Conclusions on the Digitisation and Online Accessibility of Cultural Material, and Digital Preservation 2007: Council Conclusions on scientific information in the digital age: access, dissemination and preservation 2008: Council Conclusions of 20 November 2008 on the European digital library EUROPEANA

National Digital Library of Finland 2008−2011 National Digital Library means: a common public interface for the information resources of libraries, archives and museums (in operation in 2011) digitisation of the most essential cultural heritage materials of libraries, archives and museums development of a long-term preservation solution for electronic cultural heritage materials (a detailed plan in 2010) increasing competence National Digital Library will work as an aggregator for the European Digital Library Europeana.

Solution: New System Architecture andPublic Interface Separating user interface from back end systems Hiding back end systems from users A common Public Interface will replace current user interfaces (library systems, portals, institutional archives, DPS…) The public interface is one installation for many institutions (many views)

  9. What is there for users? Users do not need to know: organisations or collections Users can: Reach all services they need Reach different kind of collections Customize the service to their liking

  10. And more... Organisations can tailor the interface to meet their users' needs The idea is to bring the service to users' working environments (such as e-science and learning environments) and to social networking forums

  11. Content Users will have access to: Public domain material available for all Material with restricted / authorised use: Licensed material (e.g. scientific journals, e-books) Material with restricted display and use (e.g. archive material)

  12. Public interface: searchable content in 2011 50 million database references 2 million pages of newspapers 2 million pages of archive material hundreds of thousands photographs and museum objects licenced material: 300 000 e-books, 20 000 e-journals 13

Benefits of the National Digital Library Project improves availability of electronic information resources and makes their use easier strengthens cooperation across organisational and sectoral borders reduces overlapping expenses from digitisation and management, distribution and preservation of electronic material improves interoperability, manageability and efficiency of processes preserves the potential of cultural heritage material far into the future
