  4. Purpose “Reduce smoking prevalence and health inequalities associated with smoking in West Sussex”

  6. Working in partnership is the building block to success A comprehensive tobacco control programme involves multiple agencies and a clear commitment from senior officers at each partner organisation.

  7. Gather and use the full range of data to inform tobacco control

  8. Use tobacco control to tackle health inequalities The Marmot report on health inequalities identifies tobacco control as being central to any strategy to tackle health inequalities. Smoking prevalence in routine and manual workers in West Sussex has increased since 2009, up to 29.7%.

  9. Deliver consistent, coherent and co-ordinated communication

  11. Build and sustain capacity in tobacco control

  14. Helping Young People to be tobacco free Stand alone interventions will have little impact. Youth prevention work should be part of all of the other strands as part of de-normalising smoking as a habit.

  17. In a nutshell.. cv cv What is it? The 28-day mass participation event to help England’s smokers stop Why participate? Because Stoptober has been proven as a highly effective way to help people stop smoking; more support than ever before; and everyone is doing it together What will support this physically? A refreshed 28-day app, email and text service and pack; as well as an active support network on social media and in many workplaces What will support this emotionally? Other stoppers, families and friends, the ‘herd’ and your local community - from healthcare professionals to community stakeholders

Building on success • After a successful 2012 launch and 2013 follow up Stoptober is back, the 28 day challenge that launches in September and sees people all over the country stop smoking for the month of October. • 2013 achieved over 250,000 registrations and 500,000 product orders. • Over 65% of those taking part reached 28 days – making them 5 times more likely to quit for good.

  21. West Sussex • Over 2,000 people in West Sussex signed up Stoptober on the national Smokefree website • 400 people in West Sussex signed up to Stoptober with the support of the local Stop Smoking Service– 167 quit smoking
