  2. What Is cancer? • any malignant growth or tumor caused by abnormal and uncontrolled cell division. • It may spread to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system or the blood stream.

  3. What causes cancer? • GENES • Cigarette Smoking • Secondhand Smoke • Sun and UV Exposure

  4. Cancer symptoms • A symptom is a signal of disease, illness, injury, or that something is not right in the body • Fever • Extreme tiredness (fatigue) • Weight loss • Yellowing in the eyes • Jaundice • Headaches • Changes in a mole

  5. Different stages of cancer • As cancer progress it starts a new stage • Stage 0 Carcinoma(Cancer) is the first stage and the least dangerous • Stage I- cancer is only in one part of the body • Stage II- cancer is slowly advancing • Stage III- cancer is advancing even more • Stage IV- cancer has spread to other places in the body via the blood stream

  6. Types of cancer • There are over 100 different forms of cancer in the world. These are the most common types: • Lung Cancer • Prostate Cancer • Breast Cancer • Lymphoma • Colon Cancer • Uterine Cancer • Leukemia(cancer of the blood) • Skin Cancer • Bladder Cancer

Who cancer effects • Cancer effects everyone who is involved; the sick and their family. • Although different cancers effect different people • Breast cancer is most common in women and is very rare in men • Prostate cancer only effects men since women do not have a prostate gland • Uterine cancer only effects women because men do not have uterus’ • Leukemia(blood cancer) mostly effects children

Cancer treatments • SURGERY- physical removal of cancerous cells • RADIATION THERAPY- high energy rays destroy cancer cells • CHEMOTHERAPY- anti-cancer medication • HORMONE THERAPY- one’s own hormones are manipulated to cure the cancer • IMMUNOTHERAPY- using one’s own immune system to fight the cancer

  9. Nurse • I’m a nursing student here at Western Michigan University • One day I plan to work in a hospital with cancer patients • It’s my dream to help people with disease and let them know that someone cares and wants to help them through this hard time
