  6. Niche: place in the food chain • This species is thought to be an opportunistic predator, using currents and eddies around marine features to prey on prawns, squid, crustaceans, and small fishes. • 4th trophic level = tertiary consumer

  7. Age • The orange roughy is a long lived fish that grows slowly, matures late (~30 years) and lives up to 130 years. (video later says 180 years!)

  10. Abiotic Habitat Features Orange roughy lives in very deep waters from 500-1500m worldwide. Need prominent topographic features such as seamounts, particularly during spawning and feeding.

  13. Orange Roughy Adaptation • Special proteins in the eyes let them see bioluminescence and deep sea lighting • Go through phases when they are mostly inactive and do not feed. During this time the fish is slow and sluggish and their colour fades. This may be an adaptation to their deep sea environment and a way of coping when there is no food available.

  18. By-catch • Bycatch of orange roughy tends to be low because fish gather around seamounts and are captured as schools. • Bycatch of other fish caught with the roughy is high.

By-catch with Roughy is high! • A study from the oldest fishery in New Zealand showed declines in the abundance of 10/18 of the species that have been regular bycatch in orange roughy fisheries between 1979 to 1997 (e.g. black oreo, smooth oreo, deepwater dogfish, slickheads, rattails and basketwork eels and sharks).

  21. Threats to the Roughy! • Caught with bottom trawls that damage the seafloor and catch any species in their path. • Populations of the fish have been wiped out by overfishing and may take decades to recover.

Why is conservation difficult? • The orange roughy aggegrates when spawning, so the whole school gets caught. • The orange roughy is extremely vulnerable to fishing pressure because it grows slowly, does not reproduce until 30 years of age, and lives up to 130 years. • They also have a low fecundity (reproductive rate) and may spawn irregularly. • http://www.oneworldoneocean.com/blog/entry/the-red-list-orange-roughy scroll down to video at bottom
