Scoring Workshop Agenda 10-12pm • Review DRAFTS of Annotated Scoring Guides: Web-review currently on-line: www.mi.gov/meap • Final document to be posted to MEAP website January 2008 • Break into small groups for mock range-finding with a released high school item: ~45 minutes • Reconvene for whole group discussion

  3. What is Range Finding? A committee composed of Michigan social studies educators reads a sample of student papers to determine a “range” of scores for that prompt: • 0-3 points for 6th grade assessment • 0-4 points for 9th grade assessment • 0-5 points for 11th (mme) grade assessment

  4. Rubric Criteria by grade level

  5. Position • Clear yes or no • Support for position • Must have clear position and support to receive any further points

  6. Core Democratic Value (CDV) • Civitas curriculum • Common Good: Must mention “who sacrifices what” in order to receive the point (HS and 9th grade only) • Pursuit of Happiness: Must mention that it does not infringe on the rights of others

  7. Data • A “preponderance” of accurate and relevant data interpretation

  8. Prior Knowledge (PK) • Prior social studies knowledge (history, civics, econ, geog) • Current events-of a national or relevant local nature • Applied in such a way to support the position • Cannot “double dip” with CDV or data section

  9. Opposing Argument & Refutation • Explanation of opposing argument • How the argument is flawed
