The Lifespan Respite Team LOCAL: • Ann Marie Cook: CEO and President, Lifespan of Greater Rochester, Inc. • Corinda Crossdale: Director, Monroe County Office for the Aging • Maureen Murphy: Director, NYS Caregiving and Respite Coalition STATE: • Karen Iovino: Lifespan Respite Coordinator, New York State Office for the Aging • Jennifer Rosenbaum: Lifespan Respite Director, New York State Office for the Aging • Thea Griffin, NYConnects (New York’s ADRC)

Lifespan Respite Care ActP.L. 109-442 Passed 2006 Purposes: • To expand and enhance respite care services; • To improve statewide dissemination and coordination of • respite care; • To provide, supplement, or improve access and quality of • respite care services. LIFESPAN RESPITE CARE: The term ‘lifespan respite care’ means a coordinated system of accessible, community-based respite care services for family caregivers of children or adults with special needs. RESPITE CARE: The term ‘respite care’ means planned or emergency care provided to a child or adult with a special need in order to provide temporary relief to the family caregiver of that child or adult.

Lifespan Respite Initiative Goal Expand and strengthen the New York State Caregiving and Respite Coalition (NYSCRC): • Build a caregiver support services network • Develop a statewide coordinated system, increasing access to respite services for families across age/disability spectrums, including access to emergency respite services.

  8. Lifespan Respite Initiative Objectives • Develop a coordinated system of accessible, community-based respite services for people of all ages/across all needs. • Conduct a statewide inventory of respite services and include in the statewide NY Connects database.

  9. Lifespan Respite Initiative Objectives • Identify and facilitate development of respite services for underserved populations. • Identify current programs that train informal caregivers and provide a methodology to link caregivers to programs.

  10. Lifespan Respite Initiative Objectives • Determine good practices and establish linkages to recruitment and training of volunteers. • Raise public awareness about caregiving and value of respite. • Develop a strategic approach to ensure sustainability.

  13. The THINK GROUP • By interest and by invitation, representing a broad cross-section across the Lifespan and Disability spectrum. • Length of term: March 2011- September 2011. • Convened in March with two introductory calls.

THINK GROUP • Purpose: Explore how different systems define and utilize “Respite.” • Desired Outcome: a common language surrounding “Respite”, “Caregiver”, and “Care Recipient.” • Process: Monthly conference calls with presentations by representatives from a variety of systems – generating information about Respite in different service systems.

  18. THINK GROUP – 132 Registered Participants – 36 Counties & NYC

  19. Challenges • The biggest challenge: the meaning of ‘respite’ in different systems, for different populations –incorporating all of it under the ‘lifespan respite’ definition.

  20. The work of the THINK GROUP will be used to provide the framework of the Respite Inventory Process. When all is said and done

  22. NYSCRC Representation A indicates that we do not have a Coalition member from that county. As of June 1, this affected 13/62 Counties: Cayuga, Chautauqua, Essex, Greene, Lewis, Ontario, Putnam, St. Lawrence, Schuyler, Seneca, Tioga, Wayne, and Wyoming Counties.

Activities Sponsor LIFESPAN Respite Program NYSCRC Monthly Newsletter Mid-month HERO Award Presence at regional activities and conferences Communication enhancements (Web, Facebook, etc.) Coordination of THINK GROUP Establish Advisory Group Conduct Respite Inventory Develop Respite Database Goals Coalition member in every county. Become the ‘one stop shop’ in New York for information and resources related to Caregiving and Respite. Become a national model for the Lifespan Respite Program. NYSCRC Activities and Goals
