  1. Real Time Operations and use of WITSML in Shell Energistics WITSML public seminar May 2007 Jeroen Kreijger, Wells Information Manager Shell International Exploration and Production Mal Speagell, RTOC Well design team lead Shell Exploration and Production Europe File Title

  2. Overview • Change in workflows meets advances in technology • Strategy for leveraging real time data • Importance of WITSML for Shell • Enabling integrated dataflows across disciplines • Experiences and needs to date

  3. Team Collaboration • Field development planning • Peer and after action reviews • Morning meetings • Technical Analysis • Engineering analysis • Post well analysis • Best practices • 24/7 Monitoring • Operations monitoring • Problem ID & intervention • Specialty analysis Workflow meets technology Well complexity increasing… multi-discipline need for better technology application and interaction Globally dispersed operations… need for best practice sharing and effective collaboration tools Technical experts in short supply… need for better leveraging of global expertise Big Crew Change… need for knowledge transfer / retention

  4. Strategy for leveraging real time data • Provide advice to rig crew through 24/7 monitoring and analysis of real-time data flowing into the Real Time Operations Centers (RTOC) • Involve expertise from well engineers and geologists/geophysicists by making real-time data available over the web or in native applications • Mining of real-time data to identify areas for improvement and extract lessons learned • Retention of real-time data for offset well comparison

  5. Importance of WITSML for Shell • Enables more reliable and higher quality data flow from the rig to the remote experts • Provides more flexibility in terms of data flow scenarios and vendor/software solutions, and it is easier and quicker to connect multiple vendors • Basis for integrated workflows by bringing the real-time data domain closer to the well planning, engineering, and operations domains

  11. Experiences and needs • Strong interest to minimise set-up/configuration and maintenance effort • Need for flexibility to support multiple scenarios • WITSML becomes valuable in any part of the data flow • Data quality issues need to be addressed as early in the data flow as possible • There is a need for more clarity on the use of various versions/flavors of WITSML in software solutions • Shell very much interested to continue and intensify collaboration between vendors, service companies, and operators to embed WITSML in our workflows
