  4. What are some opportunities? Using the LEED Template…… • Planning/siting • Water • Energy • Materials • Air

  5. Entrepreneurism/Employment and LEED • Planning – Consulting, brownfield reclamation/financing, biking systems • Water – Indigenous landscaping, on-site treatment (composting) • Energy – E2/AE/DG consulting, greening preservation & existing buildings • Materials – Grease/organics recycling, LCA purchasing, green intelligence/products • Air – IAQ research, vegetating interiors

  6. Why is greening particularly important in schools? • Schools major users and developers • Programs and assistance ($) available, ex. LEED Green Schools, DEP/PDE funding • Schools need help in navigating “green tidal wave” • Immense workforce development/educational opportunities • Possibilities to bridge K-12/college “green” divide • June 19, 2009 Green Schools Summit at Clarion University

  11. Summary • Greening is real, though less so in NWPA • Immense financial, educational and environmental benefits • Greening of existing buildings (especially schools) possible and vital, especially in terms of addressing climate change • Greening cuts across many disciplines, especially STEM • Green Schools Summit 6/19/09 at CUP • DEP can be a partner and resource in greening efforts • www.state.dep.pa.us • gmcumber@state.pa.us, 814-332-6352
