Hanauerconducted a survey to access the use of internet by students of a diverse community college. Lockhart has conducted pilot study to evaluate the views of undergraduate dental students on a pilot web-based e-learning programme to establishits merit in providing education in infection prevention and control.

  5. OBJECTIVES To access awareness of students towards use of internet. To access the frequency of internet use. To find the purpose for which they are using internet. To make comparison between the students from Dental and Engineering college.

  6. METHODOLOGY The study is limited to the students of PDM Dental College and Research Institute and PDM Institute of Engineering and Technology. The study sample comprises of 400 students of first year to final year (100 each year) of Dental college and 400 students of first to final year (100 each year) of Engineering college. A questionnaire consisting of 12 questions including student’s demographics, internet usage, commonly used sites, location of internet usage, mode of using internet, whether use internet for online shopping, commonly searched websites, whether search e-journals and e-books, whether attended any Information & Technology conference/seminar etc was distributed

  7. DATA ANALYSIS & DISCUSSION The collected data through questionnaire was organized, tabulated and interpreted by using simple statistical methods. The discussion deals with the analysis and interpretation of data collected through questionnaire.

  8. RESULTS 230(57.5%) students from Dental college and 320(80%) students from Engineering college gave their feedback by returning fully filled questionnaires. These 550 respondents became the sample for final analysis of the study. The further analysis is based on the feedback given by these 550 students.

Daily usage of Internet is more by Engineering students 235(73.43) as compared to Dental students 53(23.04%) whereas 2-4 times/week, 2-4 times/month and once/month usage of Internet is more by Dental students 85(36.95%), 62(26.95%) and 30(13.04%) respectively when compared to Engineering students 60(18.75%), 20(6.25%) and 5(1.56%) respectively.

  18. FINDINGS The majority of the students use Internet for education purpose, though the response is more in Engineering students 275(85.93%) as compared to Dental students 170(73.91%). Maximum number of Dental students uses Internet at home (50.43%) and least at College/Dept. (19.13%) whereas Technical students research net mostly at College (68.75%) with few students using at cyber café (2.50%).

  19. SUGGESTIONS The library staff or IT(information technology) department who have acquired a good deal of efficiency in the collection, organization and retrieval of information should feel duty bound to make sure that users are able to obtain right information at right time. IT department should be made separately for Dental colleges also to educate students about Internet usage as Internet has the potential to educate and empower the dental students by providing information on oral health services and by supporting self-help and patient choice and also Internet is considered as significant source of health information for doctors and general public.

  20. CONCLUSION Internet provides a major platform to gain information for any field of education whether it is Arts, Commerce, Medical or Non-medical. Teachers and students are using Internet increasingly to raise academic response for their educational and research work as IT departments should be made separately in each and every college irrespective of the profession, to educate the teachers and students about internet usage so that Internet resources can be used and accessed efficiently.
