  2. CMS – Server Virtualization Reasons why CMS looked at a virtual server solution • Agency Consolidation to Primary Datacenter • Physical Space • Power • Hardware Refresh • High Availability

  3. CMS – Server Virtualization The New Physical Environment • Water Cooled Racks • Hardware • HP Blade Servers – • Dual AMD 2.6GHZ dual core • 16GB ram • SAN attached • EMC Symmetrix DMX • VMware ESX 3.5 • 16 blades per VM clusters • VM clusters spread across 4 racks and 4 enclosures

  4. CMS – Server Virtualization Virtualization Project – phase 1 • Server Assessment • 380 servers assessed • 4 servers were deemed as “not candidates” • Physical to Virtual process (P2V) • Planning is the most important step • Time for P2V to run is unknown • Documentation – the before and after settings

  5. CMS – Server Virtualization Virtualization Project – phase 1 • Issues we ran into • Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt (FUD) - #1 Problem • Hidden legacy server problems • Conversion time – no way to predict • Digital Certificates had to be recreated • Application Licenses tied to MAC address

  6. CMS – Server Virtualization Virtualization Project – phase 1 • Current Numbers • Total number of physical servers removed – 280 • Total number of virtual servers – 471

  7. CMS – Server Virtualization Virtualization Project – phase 2 • Project will continue with the next set of servers • The remaining Windows servers will be assessed • Netware servers • Legacy virtual servers moved to new environment
