These programs can increase their social skills and build their confidence, too.  For many children with special needs, after school activities are the best opportunity to make friends and build social skills in a fun environment. We've rounded up a few options for you to consider!

3. 3 VISUAL ARTS PROGRAM  Children With Special Needs Bay Area needs often have difficulties learning and developing social skills, and art can be a wonderful way to help children build those skills. In fact, the arts have been shown to strengthen cognitive and physical development, improve problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities and promote goal- setting and self-confidence.  Students enrolled in the Visual Arts Program have the opportunity to pursue an interdisciplinary course of study, pursuing their interests within a liberal arts context. They also have the opportunity to form collaborations across disciplines, working with musicians, actors, scenic designers, biologists and architects, as well as artists of a variety of mediums.

4. 4  The program encourages interdisciplinary exploration and experimentation within the studio as well as with new media, creative programming, interactive art, interventionist art, games, simulation and more.  Under the guidance of a dedicated faculty of practicing artists, undergraduates in the Visual Arts Program explore painting, drawing, photography, filmmaking, graphic design, sculpture and multimedia in studio courses that emphasize direct hands-on art making under the aegis of a liberal arts education.  In addition to the core curriculum, visual arts students can complete a minor in art history or design. Graduates have gone on to careers in a variety of fields, including advertising, art history, film production and more.

5. 5 ACTING CAMP  The Acting Camp is a great way for kids with special needs to learn the art of acting and performing arts in general. Whether they want to perform a solo performance or work as part of a larger ensemble, the staff is there to help them along the way.  From awe-inspiring visual art installations to interactive musical performances, the kids are sure to be entertained all summer long. Designed to meet individual needs and maximize each child’s potential, this program offers everything from one-to-one support to group programs that feature hands-on learning and peer interaction.  The camp also boasts a stellar lineup of instructors ranging in experience from veteran actors to newbies eager to hone their craft. The most important thing about these programs is that they provide an engaging environment where kids with special needs can thrive and have fun while doing it.

6. 7 MUSIC LESSONS  Music is not only fun, but it can also boost the self-esteem of children with special needs. Studies show that students who study music often do better in other subjects as well.  In addition, learning to play an instrument can help with their attention span and coordination. It can also enhance their social skills and encourage them to interact with others.  There are many private schools and music teachers around Long Island who offer lessons for children with special needs. These teachers can work one on one with your child to help them learn how to play an instrument.

7. 8  Some of these schools have music therapists who will work with them on a one on one basis to make sure that they are getting the most out of their lessons. They will also be able to help your child with any specific issues that they are having.  When I teach a student who is in a special needs class, we try to make sure that they are working on things that will help them with their social and communication skills. Because music is non-verbal, it helps them open up a different way to communicate with the world and with the people around them.

8. 9 SCHOOL AFTER-SCHOOL CARE  A school-based program can provide a safe place for your child to spend their after-school hours. It also provides your child with a chance to make friends and interact with peers with similar interests. It can help them build social skills and learn new responsibilities.  Children with special needs and disabilities need extra attention and services in order to thrive, just like their non-disabled peers do. These students may need to receive an individualized education plan or 504 educational plan, which requires an evaluation by a multi-disciplinary team.

9. 10  These services can take the form of physical or occupational therapy, special education classes, and other supports to assist with daily living and learning activities.
