  2. What’s new in multiplication? Addition 3 + 2 = 5 3 cats + 2 cats = 5 cats Multiplication 3 × 2 = 6 3 groups × 2 cats = 6 cats

  3. What’s division? Multiplication 3 × 2 = 6 3 groups × 2 cats (units in each group) = 6 cats (total units) Division 6 ÷ 2 = 3 6 cats (total units) ÷ 3 groups = 2 cats (units in a group) 6 cats (total units) ÷ 2 cats (units in a group) = 3 groups We can also interpret division as missing factor problems. 3 × ____ = 6 ____ × 2 = 6

  6. Commutative Property You can switch the factors and get the same product.

  7. Distributive Property Multiplication expressions can be split into smaller multiplication expressions. When we add the smaller expressions together, we get the same amount as the original multiplication.

  8. Distributive Property A student knows multiplication facts ×5 and ×10. How could this student use what he or she knows to figure out 7×6? What about 9×8? Draw a picture to show a possible strategy.
