  1. Mechanical Engineeringat RIT- Is it the right choice for you? Dr. Ed Hensel, Dept. Head

  2. What do Mech E's do? • Product Design, Development, Manufacturing, Support, Service, Disposal • Aerospace • Automotive • Medical • Thermal Systems (heating and cooling of people, computers, homes, equipment, air, sea, land, and space vehicles) • Mechanical Systems (Components, equipment, machines, buildings, transportation, manufacturing, safety, health) Everything !

  3. Why do We Need Mechanical Engineers?

  4. Where do Mechanical Engineers Work? All over the World ! In the Field In Offices Germany In Factories In Space! Wherever Needed France Australia

  5. First Year Choices at RIT

  6. The M.E. Program is Hands – on! First Year: Materials Processing Freshman Seminar Measurement, Instrumentation, and Control Measurement, Instrumentation & Control Mech E Wins Engineering Day Competition!

  7. Materials Processing Learning how to use Metrology Equipment Such as Micrometers Learning how to use Machines in the shop

  8. Freshman Seminar Building Relationships That Last a Lifetime Four Stroke Engine Disassembly and Assembly

  9. Special Academic Programs in M.E. • Aerospace Option • Automotive Option • BS/Master’s Option • College Honors Program

  10. Aerospace Option • BS in Mechanical Engineering • Curricular Changes • Substitute Intro to Aerospace Engineering for Transport Phenomena • Technical Electives • Aerodynamics • Aerospace Structures • Propulsion • Free Elective • Flight Dynamics • Sr. Design Project in Aerospace Field

  11. American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Heavy Lift Competition

  12. Automotive Option • BS in Mechanical Engineering • Technical Electives • Vehicle Dynamics • Internal Combustion Engines • Free Elective • Intro. To Automotive Design and Manufacturing • Sr. Design Project in Automotive Field

  14. American Society of Mechanical Engineers Moonbuggy Competition Two Person Human Powered Vehicle

  15. BS/Master’s Option • Need to Apply for Entry in Second Year • Highly Competitive Program • GPA Requirements for Entry • 4 vs. 5 co-ops • Earn two degrees • Work closely with a graduate advisor on a research or Product Development activity

  16. Thermal Analysis Lab – Micro Channel Heat Transfer FIRST Robotics Team Vibrations Laboratory

  17. Co-Op Info for Mech Engineers • Ms. Carolina Cizmar is the co-op coordinator for all Mech. Eng. students. • Recently 355 opportunities posted for KGCOE last Fall 02-1 • 127 Placements for Mech. Eng. students in Fall 02-1 • 105 Placements for Mech. Eng. students in Fall 01-1 • Most jobs are in New York state and nearby areas. However, there are opportunities nationally and internationally. • Wages for most students on their first or second co-op period fall between $8.00 and $13.00 per hour; this increases in later co-ops. • For Fall 02-1: Low: $8.00/hr Average: $14.59/hr High: $25.85/hr • Students should be flexible in looking for positions away from Rochester and away from home! • The Co-op office helps M.E. Students with • Group and individual job search assistance • Arranges for employers to visit RIT campus • Lists available co-op and full time positions • Access to a library of job search resources Impromptu Design Competitions

  18. Recent Employers of RIT M.E.s: • Alstom Signaling • AMP • Bausch & Lomb • Black & Decker (Emhart Power) • Carrier Corporation • Garlock • General Motors (Several locations) • Dresser Rand • Eastman Kodak • General Electric (Several locations) • Gleason • Hansford Manufacturing • Harris Corporation (RF Communications) • IBM (Several locations) • INSA (France) • ITT/Goulds Pumps • Johnson Controls • Johnson & Johnson • Motorola • Pactiv • Parker Hannifin • Peko Precision Products • Raymond Corporation • Rochester Gas & Electric • Valmet Paper Machines (Finland) • Xerox Corporation

Allied Signal Aerospace Amphenol Aerospace Boeing (PA, WA, & CA locations) Carleton Technologies Flightline Electronics General Dynamics Goodrich Aerospace Hexcel Pottsville Corp. Lockheed Martin

  21. M.E.s Work Well in Teams and Individually • M.E.s work with teams of other professionals (other engineering disciplines, science, business, political professionals) and skilled labor. • An M.E. is often looked to as the General Practitioner of the engineering disciplines • Mechanical Engineers do equally well in small firms (the only engineer around) and in large corporations (focused expertise for the problem at hand).

  22. Summary • Mechanical Engineering is • Exciting • Challenging • Rewarding • We’re pleased to have you here at RIT with us. • If this sounds like the right program for you, give us a call.
