Starter – recap 1 What is meant by CSR – Corporate social responsibility? ( 2) 2 Give 2 examples of corporate socially responsible businesses and explain why. (4) 3 Why does Greenpeace have a campaign against KFC at the moment ? Do you think it is justified explain why or why not. (4)

  2. Social Responsibility Businesses do not exist in isolation eg they belong to part of a wider community; employees. Families, suppliers, local community, environment etc Corporate Social Responsibility( CSR ) means taking a responsible attitude to all those who work for the business and are affected by it. CSR means that a business with behave in an ethical manner by trying to bring benefits to other people as well as making a profit. Pair Task: 1 What factors would you use to measure a businesses CSR?

What is fair Trade? • Fair Trademeans paying farmers a better (fair) price for their produce which will allow them more control over their lives and also improve their standard of living. • The Fair Trade Markis a consumer label which guarantees that the farmers who produced the food originally were paid a fair price. The Fair Trade Foundation awards the fair-trade Mark to products that meet the agreed criteria (standards).

The Fair Trade Criteria1The price paid for the product must cover the cost of production.2 Workers on plantations have decent wages, housing and health & safety standards.3 No child labour or forced labour is allowed.4 A percentage of the money they earn is used by the producers to improve their living and working conditions.5 Producers are treating the environment in a sustainable way.6 Small scale farmers and workers on plantations can join organisations that will help and support them, eg. Co-operatives or trade unions.7 Contracts make sure there is long term planning for sustainable development.8 Advance payment is made so that smaller producers won’t fall into debt.The Fairtrade Foundation | Fairtrade - Coffee: Uganda

B If we buy fair trade products, we can make a difference to the lives of thousands of farmers in the developing world. C Farmers in the UK deserve more support than farmers on the other side of the world. D Supermarkets in the UK should provide the consumer with food at the lowest possible prices.

  12. Agree or Disagree? E Multinational companies which control much of the world’s trade are a good thing because they provide jobs for thousands of people in rich and poor countries. F The main thing to change is us – we should be prepared to pay a little more for fair trade products. G The UK should import less food from countries where people don’t have enough to eat. H Fair trade food tastes just as good or better, than other brands. I It’s up to governments of developing countries to help their poor, not up to UK consumers.
