  4. History of Hanoi • In1010, King Ly Thai To, the first ruler of the Ly Dynasty, moved the capital of Đại Việt(大越,the Great Viet, then the name of Vietnam) to the site of the Đại La Citadel. Claiming to have seen a dragon ascending the Red River, he renamed itThanglong(昇龍, Ascending dragon) - a name still used poetically to this day. • In1802, when the Nguyen Dynasty was established and then moved the capital down to present-day Hue, it was renamed asHanoi(河内,can be translated as Between Rivers or River Interior). • Hanoi was occupied by the French in1873and passed to them ten years later. • The city was occupied by the Japanese in1940,and liberated in1945, when Ho Chi Minh proclaimed the independence of Vietnam. • During Vietnam war, Hanoi was the capital ofNorth Vietnam. • Following the end of Vietnam war, Hanoi becamethe capital ofVietnamwhen North and South Vietnam were reunited onJuly 2, 1976. • OnAugust 1, 2008, Hanoi absorbed the neighboring province of Hatay, Vinhphuc’s Melinh district, and three communes from Luongson, Hoabinh, effectivelytripling its size.
