The diameter of this tunnel is 5.5 meters and the distance between parallel tunnels will vary with thestretch. Over 250 people have been deployed at this site and the construction is in progress using German-made Tunnel Boring Machine. To handle the challenges of the failing of earth, water seepage or soil erosion, the tunnel segments will be sealed with thick layers of concrete. Kolkata Metro Railway Corporation Limited is taking a lot of efforts to address issues of structural damage caused to popular heritage buildings such as the Howrah District Library situated near the site as of digging activities. The measures to widen foundation of the structure as well as the grouting of the soil have been undertaken. The authorities are devising plans to prevent the damage to other buildings in proximity that include Currency Building which is an Italian structure built in 1830’s and 2 Jewish Monuments- Beth-EI Synagogue and Maghen DavidSynagogue. The idea of the under-river tunnel was intellectualized way back in 1984 under the rule of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during construction of metro project but couldn’t undertake due to the lack offunds.
