What is necessary to graduate with a high school diploma? • Minimum 2.0 GPA • 24 Credits - A credit is received for passing a class. • 4 English • 4 Math • 3 Science • 3 History • 1 PE – HOPE • 1 Fine/Performing/Practical Art • 8 Electives • Ex: 2 years of the same Foreign Language, Intensive Reading, Intensive Math, Graphic Arts • Level 3 or higher on 10th grade FSA ELA Reading and End of Course Exams in Algebra I, Geometry, Biology & US History • Complete one course through online learning (Florida Virtual School) Graduation Requirements

High School Diploma Options:(2.0 GPA, 24 credits, and pass Alg 1 EOC and ELA gr 10 assessments) • College • Career College • Military • Jobs that require a minimum high school diploma • Certificate of Completion Options: (2.0 GPA and 24 credits without passing Alg 1 EOC and/or ELA gr 10 assessments) • Community College classes, but must have a comparable score to complete an AA degree • GED with or without Career Training • Jobs that do not require a high school diploma • Continue to take ACT/SAT for ELA comp score and PERT for Alg 1 comp score • Can be awarded High School Diploma years after high school • No Diploma Options: (Below a 2.0 GPA and /or less than 24 credits without passing Alg 1 EOC and/or ELA gr 10 assessments) • Stay in high school until 20 years old • GED with or without Career Training • Drop out of high school • Jobs that do not require high school diploma Senior Options

Diploma Types Standard Diploma – 24 credit, 2.0 GPA Merit Diploma – Standard Diploma plus one or more industry certification Scholar Diploma – Standard Diploma plus passing scores on 10th gr ELA, Geo EOC, Bio EOC, and US History EOC, pass Chemistry or Physics, Statistics or equally rigorous course, receive 2 credits in the same world language, and receive a credit in an AP or IB class. If students do not pass the Alg 1 EOC, a score of 97 or higher on the PERT can fulfill the Alg 1 EOC graduation requirement. • If students do not pass the 10th grade ELA EOC, a score of 430 or higher on the New SAT Evidence Based Reading and Writing, OR a 24 on the New SAT Reading Subtest, OR a 19 on the ACT Reading test. • Passing the Alg 1 EOC & 10th grade ELA assessments (or achieving a comparable score on one of the tests below) is essential for a high school diploma.   6. Students who need a comparable score for graduation or who want to attend a four year college or university should take the SAT or ACT. Students can take these tests multiple times in an attempt to reach higher scores. What is the difference between the tests? The SAT is a reasoning test, assessing student’s inference, command of evidence, the heart of Algebra, and analysis of History and Science abilities. Tests include – Reading, Writing, & Math, The ACT is a review of what students are learning in high school courses. It assesses the knowledge of language, algebra, geometry and other math functions, scientific insight, conventions of English and more… Tests include – English, Math, Reading, & Science. When: Both tests are given on assigned Saturdays each year. Where: Test sites are available throughout Polk County. How: Sign up to take the ACT or SAT on each test’s website. Any student interested in college or career college should complete the FAFSA. • How is FAFSA used? • Eligibility for federal aid and grants • Eligibility for individual school financial aid • Eligibility for work study in college – Part time jobs for college students in need. All transcript requests must be turned in to the guidance office in the transcript basket. • Know if your college requests paper or electronic transcripts. • If your college asks students to self report transcripts, you may request an unofficial transcript in guidance. • Allow at least 5 school days for transcripts to be sent or printed for the student. • All guidance letters of recommendation requests must be requested in the guidance office by completing & turning in the DHS Brag Sheet. • When brag sheets are turned in, letters will be completed within 7 school days. February 19 – 22, 2020 • Fly from Tampa to Newark, NJ & transfer to a bus into NYC • All inclusive trip – all transportation, hotel rooms (4 students per room), meals, entrance fees, ticket to Broadway show, dedicated tour bus in NYC, dedicated tour guide, and night security at the hotel • Fly home from Newark, NJ to Tampa • Price per student: $1,715 with a minimum of 30 students • More information on when and how to sign up for the trip will come in May 2019.   18. 1st Semester Study for ACT and/or SAT 2 – 4 hours per week Continue community service hours – goal = 75 – 100 plus hours by end of 12th grade Review Bright Futures and other scholarship requirements. Begin applying for Junior scholarships. Research colleges and/or career colleges - Choose top 5 schools Research GPA, test scores, acceptance rate, application timeline for top schools Join clubs, take on leadership roles, and build resume/application 2nd Semester Sign up and study for ACT and/or SAT (Saturdays only). See Ms. McG for fee waiver if on free/reduced lunch. Take ACT and/or SAT several times (2 fee waivers for each test) until you have achieved scores needed for BF and/or colleges Continue researching the best schools for your area of study and scholarships open to Juniors Create raise.me & fastweb.com accounts for scholarship options Make summer plans for community service (especially if you need a large number of hours) Junior Timeline

  19. 1st Semester • Study for ACT and/or SAT 2 – 4 hours per week • Take ACT and/or SAT last times (2 fee waivers for each test) until you have achieved scores needed for BF and/or colleges • Continue community service hours – goal = 75 – 100 plus service hours • Pay all fees and dues at DHS • Know Bright Futures and other scholarship requirements. • Apply for MANY Scholarships • Know your top 5 schools & APPLY before application deadlines • Complete your FAFSA as close to October 1 as possible • Continue activities in clubs & sports, take on leadership roles, and build resume/application 2nd Semester • FOCUS on grades, attendance, and finishing the senior year strong. • Have fun participating in senior activities • Confirm FAFSA submission and acceptance to schools • Keep applying for MANYScholarships • Choose your #1 school/military branch/job placement • Confirm post high school plans and scholarship money/awards with Ms. McG • FOCUS on grades, attendance, and finishing the senior year strong.
