Productivity vs. Work Hours Here’s What You Need To Know

As per Ajay Srinivasan, the founding CEO of ICICI Prudential AMC, more time worked does not equate to greater productivity, as countries like France and Germany rank higher on productivity per hour even though labour there works less hours. There is also the question of mental health and burnout with extended work hours.

  1. PRODUCTIVITY VS. WORK HOURS: HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  2. Long work hours alone may not get you to where you want to be: being focused, smart and productive will probably do. Following the global pandemic, as employers continue to adapt to the new norm, a debate has resurfaced: employee productivity versus work hours. So, if you are wondering whether long work hours lead to better productivity, then you have landed in the right place. Here, we are going to discuss the key differences between productivity and work hours. We will also make you aware of what are the actual factors that can impact productivity and how exactly you can increase productivity in the long run.

  3. What separates productivity from work hours? Well, the answer to the question is the output. Productivity is the amount of output an employee produces in a given time frame, while work hours are the input viz amount of time they spend working. Before the 1940s, people worked over 70 hours a week. Then a new law was passed, which restricted work hours to 40 hours a week. This helped in increasing productivity. For the first time, this reduced the misconception that increased work hours actually lead to enhanced output.

  4. How many hours should employees ideally put into work? Well, the debate related to work hours vs productivity brings us down to the question, “How much time should employees work weekly to optimise output?” As per studies, an average human’s productivity lasts two to three hours and a maximum of 6 hours. So, if you do a mentally draining job, working at most 3 hours is suggested. Consistently working longer than 8 hours can decrease productivity. Based on these findings, it has been brought to light that 30 to 40 hours a week is a good amount of time to work for jobs that require focus and attention.

  5. What are the major factors that can impact productivity? As per Ajay Srinivasan, the founding CEO of ICICI Prudential AMC, more time worked does not equate to greater productivity, as countries like France and Germany rank higher on productivity per hour even though labour there works less hours. There is also the question of mental health and burnout with extended work hours. However, long work hours are not the only enemy of productivity. There are a lot of other factors as well that can affect employee efficiency:
