Liquid Nitrogen and its Applications

Nitrogen gas is liquefied at the astoundingly low temperature of -196°C to form liquid nitrogen. This is done by fractional distillation of liquefied air. It is mainly used as a coolant, or in many cryogenic applications.   1. Liquid Nitrogen and its Applications Nitrogen gas is liquefied at the astoundingly low temperature of -196°C to form liquid nitrogen. This is done by fractional distillation of liquefied air. It is mainly used as a coolant, or in many cryogenic applications. Liquid nitrogen boils instantaneously upon contact with any warmer object, enwrapping said object with nitrogen which produces a cooling, or rather freezing effect. Liquid nitrogen also freezes any living tissue coming in contact with it. As a result of this nature, Liquid Nitrogen is stored in vacuum flasks. Industries which need a constant flow of liquid nitrogen for daily use, have liquid nitrogen generators installed, while others prefer to order them from a nearby nitrogen plant. Liquid nitrogen is easily transported without the need of pressurization, unlike some other gases. It has a wide variety of applications in numerous industries, due to its potential of maintaining sub-zero temperatures. Uses and Applications Most commonly used as a refrigerant in open-cycle refrigeration units Transport of frozen food products Preservation of blood, sperm, eggs, animal genetic samples and any other such biological samples (known as cryopreservation) As a coolant for high temperature superconductors For controlled evaporation processes in industry or analytics Removing skin abnormalities such as lesions and warts (known as cryotherapy) In heat seeking homing missiles As a source of extremely dry nitrogen gas Freezing of water and oil pipes when valves are unavailable to allow work being done on them In shrinking and welding machinery parts together. Culinary uses, for making ice-creams and other novelty food preparations Safety

  2. Liquid nitrogen is gas that boils at sub-zero temperatures, its prolonged contact with skin can cause severe cold burns. People working in nitrogen plants or at places with a nitrogen generator should especially be wary of these precautions. There are a number of things one must keep in mind while handling liquid nitrogen, which are: Always use safety gloves when handling liquid nitrogen Proper precaution to be taken while working in confined spaces with it, as it causes asphyxiation by reducing oxygen content rapidly. Ingestion of liquid nitrogen can cause severe internal damage and even death.
