Why Health Risks? • Causes of premature death • Tobacco • Physical inactivity and nutrition • Alcohol and other substance abuse • High risk sexual behavior • Inadequate preventive care (vaccination, screening, risk management) • Preventable injuries • Untreated mental health problems • Behaviors account for ~50% of premature deaths

How Was the Data Collected? • BRFSS (Adults 18 and older) • 946 telephone surveys – spring 2005 • Disproportionate stratified sampling • CDC protocols for National BRFSS (21 years) • National contractor for BRFSS (>10 states) • Weighted data analysis • YRBS (High School and Middle School) • Collected through schools • CDC protocol for random 2 stage sampling • Contractor hired by DPI • Weighted data analysis

  4. Interpreting Data • What is the accuracy and comparability to state and national data? • When is the result really different? • When is something a problem? • Who’s problem is it?

  7. Conclusions • Richland County looks a lot like North Dakota • Increase risk among adults • Binge drinking • Not enough rest or sleep • Seatbelt use • Sun exposure • Decreased risk among adults • Diabetes • Fair or poor health status • Flu vaccine coverage

  8. Conclusions • Increased risk among youth • Binge alcohol use (compared to nation) • Drinking and driving • Skipping school • Decreased risk among youth • Sexual activity • Overweight • Physical activity

Conclusions • Areas of greatest concern to me for Richland County • Are health risks skyrocketing in HS like rest of ND? • Alcohol use and drinking/driving among adults and youth • Seatbelt use among youth and adults • Overweight and physical activity among adults and youth • Tobacco use among adults and youth • Sexual activity among youth • Sexual assault and potential domestic abuse among youth
